Week 2, Day 2, Summer Mileage Program
Welcome to the second day and second week of the 2024 Summer Mileage Program, which runs for ten weeks until mid-September.
Our goal is to build you into a strong cross-country runner.
We keep it relaxed this week and add, week by week, more challenges and more inspiration!
Tuesday, July 16, 2024
Tuesday is a good day; enjoy a moderate run of 45-50 minutes. As we begin the summer mileage, it is about building some miles.
Summer mileage will change your life.
Running with friends during the summer was one of the highlights of my Summer running.
Vary the places you run, and vary the paces you run.
The key to summer running is consistency; make sure you have an easy effort day between the hard days.
We suggest a hilly run on Tuesdays and a fartlek on Thursdays (we will introduce them next week).
See the waffle racers I posted below? They were once owned by Steve Prefontaine.
The NIKE Waffe racer was my first NIKE racing shoe in the fall of 1975.
Cross-country racing shoes are a good addition to the cross-country season, so consider them. Also, make sure that
you are in good, sturdy training shoes for your summer running. Go to a local running store, and take the time to try on five or six different models,
run around in them, and find the shoes that work with you!
Enjoy your summer running, and remember to run to run with friends.
I always enjoyed my solitary running, but running with your teammates always makes it more fun.
Enjoy your summer running.
What do you want to do this summer? What do you want to achieve?
To learn about the late Steve Prefontaine (1951-1975), please read this fantastic book by Tom Jordan ( I have gone through six copies and read it 12 times): https://www.amazon.com/Pre-Americas-Greatest-Running-Prefontaine/dp/0875964575
