This is our 39th day of previews of the 2023 World Outdoor Athletics Championships, in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19-27, 2023. I found my hotel , which costs 1/3 of the price that we were charged in Eugene, Oregon, last year! Great airfares to Budapest (Lufthansa, Swiss Air, TAP, and Air Baltic are all good). You need to be there!
We have six more days of previews in our 45-day preview series of Budapest sponsored by the LOC in Budapest!
Today, we will speak about Days 2 .
The World Championships will be a lot of fun. Many people can not stay the entire championships, so we thought that we would give you some of the fun each and every day of the World Champs.
Day 2, Morning session:
Women’s 20k: The women’s 20k race walk will be held in the Center of Budapest at 7.15 AM. Grab a coffee and a pastry and watch the top race walkers in the world race for about 85 to 95 minutes. We can tell you now that this race will be widely watched and could give you a world record, which would surely be a lot of fun to see. The race will be held on a closed loop and walked 20 times.
Women’s Discus Throw, A and B. 9 and 10.30AM. The top women’s discus throwers in the world will be trying to use as little energy as possible to qualify for the finals. See Valeria Allman, Sandra Perkovic, and Yaime Perez, among others, compete in one of our sport’s most iconic events.
Women’s 400-meter heats at 9:35 AM. Who will compete in the one-lapper? Marileidy Paulino, Femke Bol, and perhaps Sydney McLaughlin? Someone will be surprised; the one lapper is thrilling to watch. Athletes can run about 300 yards all out, and the 400-meter race is about managing your energy. Watch the best women in the 400 meters.
Women’s heptathlon, Event 5, 9:50 AM. The fifth event of the heptathlon begins day 2 for the multi-eventers. Nafi Thiam, Olympic and World Champion, Anna Hall, WC bronze medalist, and Katerina Johnson Thompson, GB, are among the stars starting day 2 in this tough event.
Men’s High Jump, Qualification, 10:30 AM. The high jump will be one of the most popular events in the World Champs. Mutaz Essa Barshim, 3 time World Champion, Olympic gold, and two-time silver medalist, will be in Budapest, with athletes like Giamarco Tambieri, Italy, and JuVaughn Harrison, USA, battling to qualify.
Men’s 400m hurdles, 11:25 AM. Karston Warholm, Rai Benjamin, and CJ Allen all will be in Budapest to move on to this challenging event. Ten hurdles are placed around the 400-meter track, and many who have run it swear that the last three hurdles are higher than the first seven! That is not a fact, but it sure feels like it as your body ties up, and you still have to hurdle three hurdles prior to the finish. Watch this race; it is fascinating!
Javelin, Heptathlon, Event Six. Groups A and B. 12 noon and 1. 05 PM. . The penultimate event in the grinding heptathlon, who will throw what? This is a big event for Nafi Thiam and Anna Hall; who will be leading this one?
Women’s 100m heats, 12:10 PM. This is a fun event. Many countries have small teams, and World Athletics encourages those countries to bring their young sprinters. They still have to qualify for a top place to move on to the next round. Who will be the next stars? This is always one of my favorite events, as I love seeing the new stars.
Men’s 110m hurdles, 1:10 PM. The first round of the sprint hurdles should be fun. You will see Grant Holloway, Hansle Parchment, Devon Allen, and many others who will fight to be the fastest over the ten hurdles in 110 meters. This round should be exciting!
After the 110m hurdles, you will have about three hours to check out central Budapest.
Day 2, Evening Session
Men’s 100 meters, Semi-finals, 4:35 PM; this is always a tough round. To make it to the finals is an athlete’s dream. Watch for some fast times and some tight finishes! Will Fred Kerley continue to impress? How about Olympic champ Marcell Jacobs? How about Kenyan star Ferdinand Omanyala.
Women’s Long Jump, Final, 4:55 PM. This event will get people excited as top Europeans could win the entire thing. Malaika Mihambo, Jazmin Sawyers, and Ivana Vuleta.
Women’s 1,500 meters, Semi-finals, 5:05 PM. Running well in the semi-finals is an art form, and Laura Muir, Gudaf Tsegay, and Faith Kipyegon could all do clinics in this event. Who will join them? You will just have to wait and see. Watch this event close; it is terribly tough to manage the rounds.
Men’s 1,500 meters, Semi-finals, 5:35 PM. Who will join Mr. Ingebrigtsen, Timothy Cheruiyot, Ollie Hoare, Yared Nuguse, and many others? The men’s 1,500-meter semi-finals is a tough race and fascinating to watch. How do you get through this round without using all of your energy? Watch this round closely!
Men’s Hammer Throw Final, 5:50 PM. Budapest promised finals in evening sessions except for road events. The hammer throw is a highly competitive event. Expect Rudy Winkler of the US, Wojciech Nowicki, Poland’s Olympic champ, and Pawel Fadjek, Poland’s five-time World Champion, hoping for his sixth. To win this event, an 80-meter to 82-meter throw will probably be required to take the gold.
Heptathlon, 800 meters, Event seven, 6 PM. The scores could be very close, and at least one or two medals, if not all three, are up for grabs in this event. Anna Hall has run an 800m here in just over 2:02, and Nafi Thiam will gut it out to keep her title. A resurging Katerina Johnson Thompson could be a surprise. This event will be very tough, and the fans of multi-events love the honesty and grit of the event.
Men’s 10,000 meters, Final. 6:25 PM, The 25 Lapper is one of the most popular events in our championships. I like to call it, a chess game on the track. Lots of tactics. Joshua Cheptegai, Selemon Barega, Jo Klecker, and Paul Chelimo should all be there, and this one will be a hum-dinger (that is what we Midwestern North Americans sometimes say, don’t get scared!).
Men’s 100 meters, Finals, 7:10 PM. Who will be crowned the World’s Fastest Man? Fred Kerley told me that his secret was he loved to compete. Will Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs come around and thrill Italy in this event? Ferdinand Omanyala, Akani Simbini, who will spoil? You will just have to wait until 20 August!
