This is Witness the Wonder, the Preview to the 2023 World Champs in Budapest for Day 2, May 7, 2023.
For the next 25 days, RunBlogRun will be posting a story a day on the buildup to the World Athletics Outdoor Championships, to be held in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19-August 27, 2023.
Today, I am focusing on Grant Holloway, the WR holder at the 60m indoor hurdles, gold medalist in 2019, 2022 WC outdoors, and 2022 WC indoors, as well as silver from the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
Grant Holloway won the 110m hurdles on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at the adidas Atlanta City Games in a world-leading time of 13.01. Holloway is not only a tremendously talented hurdler, but he is no slouch at the 4×100 meters and 4×400 meters as well.
I will let you in on a little secret. The 2021 Tokyo Olympics was a surprise to many, and I believe it was an important challenge to Grant Holloway. Grant took the silver to Hansle Parchment, who took the gold.
For the next year, Grant dealt with questions about how he dealt with losing the Olympic gold. i believe that it put him back on notice that he needed to take the sport at one event at a time.
Last June, when Devon Allen won the NYC Grand Prix with a huge PB, Grant congratulated Devon. As we walked back to the bus, Grant Holloway told me that Devon had run a fantastic race and that Grant would be ready for the nationals.
Grant ran two rounds of the nationals, at which the final was won by Devon Allen. At the World Champs in Eugene, the final was macabre. First, Hansle Parchment injured himself prior to the final, so the Olympic champion was out of the final. Then, Devon Allen was disqualified (you can learn about it here). In the final, Grant Holloway and Trey Cunningham went gold and silver.
Grant Holloway and Trey Cunningham kept their cool in the final after two of the medal faves were disqualified. Of that final, Grant told the media this:
“At the start, it was just me, my lane, and my space, and I was ready for whatever happens. I am really excited about my second world title outdoors. We will balance this in a couple of weeks.
We have to continue the hard work, and we will see what happens next. It feels good to win in front of the home crowd.
This is my first world title in America, so it is even more special for me this time. About Paris 2024, when it comes to that, I have to come up with a new plan. The World record? We will see.”
Grant Holloway is a man on a mission. He is totally focused on being the finest hurdler in the sport’s history. He is focused on Budapest 2023 and will take this event one round at a time.
Grant Holloway competed at the NB Indoor Champs this past indoor season and then for a couple of events in Europe during the indoor season.
When I spoke to Grant at the NB Indoor Grand Prix on 3 February, Grant noted that the indoor season was about getting some races in and getting his timing better.
At the NB Indoor GP, Grant took wins 60 and 61 as he has continued to impress. One fun fact, Grant Holloway has not lost a race since high school at the 60-meter indoor distance. Grant trains with a team coached by his University Coach, Mike Holloway (no relation). Grant Holloway is confident that he can do whatever he puts his mind to.
At Atlanta on Saturday, May 6, Grant Holloway won the adidas Atlanta City Games 110m hurdles with nearly flawless hurdling and a well-run sprint finish. His 13.01 is now the world leader. Grant is building up his race fitness as he builds to the US Championships in July 2023 and the World Champs 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.
Grant Holloway has plans post-Budapest, but for now, he is focused, one race at a time, as he builds to Budapest.
Watch for Grant Holloway in the 110-meter hurdles in Budapest. Get your tickets for each and every round. Grant Holloway will be there, and he will be focused on his third title.
He also would like the outdoor world record, and he is very close to the WR (12.81) at this time.
Watch for Grant Holloway in Budapest; he will be focused on defending his two titles (2019, 2022) and making history! Be there, and be part of athletics history!
