Wilma Murto of Finland is the 2022 European Outdoor Athletics Champion at the pole vault. The competition was tough, with Wilma clearing 4.80m last August to take the title. Wilma broke the Finnish NR twice during the women’s final and gave Finland its first gold in the European Outdoors for a Finnish woman since 1994!
Wilma is starting the 2023 season off well, as she just opened with a new Finnish Indoor NR of 4.75m! This is the piece from EME News, our friends covering the global athletics world. (To subscribe to their paid newsletter, click here: eme@emenews.org).
Murto 475 NR
KUORTANE (FIN, Jan 7): European champion Wilma Murto opened her indoor season with a world lead mark and national record of 475 in first attempt and missed 480 three times at the pole vault indoor meeting. The second was Elina Lampela, with 440. Mikko Paavola won the men’s competition with 553.
“It’s a lot of perseverance. It’s a lot of belief in the ability to go back to that level where I was.”
