Today is a big day of racing on the college front. In Oregon, the Bill Dellinger Invitational, held in Eugene, Oregon, will be held. Named in honor of 1964 Olympic bronze medalist at 5,000m, Bill Dellinger, long-time coach at Oregon. Among the athletes that Bill Dellinger coached were Steve Prefontaine, Alberto Salazar, Rudy Chapa, Don Clary, the brothers McChesney (Steve and Bill), and Matt Centrowitz, Sr.
Bill Dellinger is one of the true icons of coaching. As a young coach at Santa Clara University and Bellarmine Prep, I found Coach Dellinger quite patient and thoughtful with my questions. A wry sense of humor, Bill loves the sport, his athletes, and his University.
For your workout, today, warm up, run 45-55 minutes relaxed, with six stride outs, 150-200 meters each, then cool down. Go watch a college race somewhere.
