Sergey Bubka was a genius at the pole vault. He set 36 world records in the pole vault, each about a centimeter difference. Over a nice conversation, where, some wine might have been involved, Mr. Bubka told me, in 2011, that he did that whole centimeter a WR thing because of the nice remuneration that came from Nike, his sponsor. I teased him that he was a budding capitalist. He just smiled.

Now, Sergey is involved in the fight for his country. Please keep Ukraine, its people and its athletes, current and former, in your thoughts.

KYIV (UKR): Legendary pole vaulter Sergey Bubka who is also the head of national olympic committee of Ukraine and coordinates the IOC help fund said on his twitter: “I love my Ukraine wholeheartedly. Under her banner, I received the highest awards. Now this flag, with which I traveled to the competition, hangs in the humanitarian aid headquarters, which directly affects my family. We will win!”
