All-comers meets are great ways to guage fitness. For me, Los Gatos High School has had wonderful all-commers meets in both the winter and summer. For those specializing in 800m/1,500m, you can go down and up. A 400m and a 3000m could be a good workout. For a 5000m specialist, the 800m and 3000m could be good. I recall having a runner compete at the mile and 4x400m relay to get leg speed. The idea is to have a speed advantage on your competition. Racing makes you a better racer. It gives you samples of the stress that you will feel in a dual meet or invitational later in the season. Just remember to keep it easy the next day.
