In December of 1976, I ran the Christmas Relays, which was a 50 mile relay team with distances from 4.5 miles to 10.5 miles going from Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay. I had run the event, I believe, in 1975, as a senior at Bellarmine in San Jose. Ca. In 1976, I was on an alumnae team, and the Bellarmine team had a ringer in leg 1. Benton Hart, who I believe was cousin of Pete Dolan, our top athlete, took leg one and put 10 minutes on the alum squad. I ran the last leg, a 10.5 mile up and down leg that was tough, but also alot of fun.
Following the exchanges all day and cheering on teammates on this cold, rugged coast was a big part of the fun. Some amazing teams gathered, and some of the finest athletes in the country were racing. It was such a different experience from watching a high school cross country meet or track meet.
There is a big difference between 3 mile racing and 10 mile and I had not yet learn respect for the distance. I ran it hard, and was sick for the next few days. A nice way to start vacation.
