The Sunday long run is more than a physical thing. Sure, it tacks on 15-20 miles to your weekly mileage. But, the time with nature, the time to speak with your training partner, the time to acknowledge that there are things bigger and more complex than Netflix is quite important.
In university, oh so long ago. I would run 18-20 miles in the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains with the likes of Gerhard Behrens, Paul Gyorey, Danny Greco, John Maloney, Danny Crowley, Brendan O’Flarahty and his brother, Rory, and, of course Rick Allen and Thuy Nygugen.
I can close my eyes and hear Rick Allen cackle as Maloney or Greco made some smart comment, inhale the fresh air and push on. There were hills to conquer.
