As we built our mileage during the summers, most of my training partners and I would meet on Sundays for a long run in Quicksilver Park in the New Almaden region in San Jose, CA. The trails were dirt and rock, and you could get a 14 miler, 16 milers, or 22 milers out of the park. There were lots of wildlife that surrounded the Quicksilver (fools gold) mines, some dating back to the conquistadors.

I ran there in college, post-college and to place my young son, Adam, as I did 15 miles with the baby jogger in the park. One Sunday, as my son slept, I witnessed a bobcat take down a jackrabbit. The speed was furious, the act was fierce, and the power of nature, once again, reminded me that Mother Nature was in control, and for us humans, control was an illusion.
Recently, I caught up high school friend, Bob, and we walked through another park, noting deer and turkeys and pleased that, once again, in movement, we were embraced by Mother Nature.
