Women’s round-up

One of the most exciting races of the evening was the women’s 60m hurdles. The final was set up by two competitive prelims. The race seemed to be between Nigeria’s Tobi Amusen and Netherlands’ Nadine Visser with Amusen shading it 7.94 to 7.96 as they ran side by side. But those of us who were concentrating on the center of the track missed Nooralotta Neziri in lane 8 sneaking home in 7.92 for a new Finnish record. She was born, Wikipedia tells me, to a Finnish mother and Macedonian Albanian father.

Dina Asher-Smith equaled her PR of 7.08 with Orlann Onbissa-Dzangue second in 7.16 and Ajla Del Ponte third in 7.17. Dina said of her performance: “I was really happy. . I thought my starts were good but they could be better – I’m a perfectionist! Obviously it’s been a strange year for all of us and a very long time since I competed on the international stage [2019 World Championships] and I haven’t done in an indoor 60m for three years – so I wasn’t sure what to expect. But to run my fastest ever season opener and to equal my PR – I’m really happy and excited to see what the next races bring. The indoor season in 2021 is more important than ever because we’ve missed a whole year of competition. We decided that I would focus on the indoor season mainly in order to be sharp going into the outdoor season in the Olympic year. While the year has been really weird, we cannot forget that the biggest prize in track and field is up for grabs this year”.

Katharina Trost of Germany just held off Winnie Nanyondo (Uganda) to win the 1500m in 4:12.02 with another German, Caterina Granz , third. Beatrice Chepkoech was her imperious self, winning the 3000m in 8:41.98 from Fantu Worku (Ethiopia) with Melissa Courtney-Bryant third. You always felt, however, if Chepkeoch had needed to find an extra 10 meters on the final lap that she would have.

An exciting shot put competition saw Auriol Dongmo (Portugal) win with 19.65 from Fanny Roos (Sweden) 18.64, both national records. Britain’s Sophie McKinna was third with a PR.
