Sam Kendricks was the World Champion in the 2017 London WC and is the reigning World Champion in 2019 Doha. Besides being one of the finest vaulters in the world, Sam is also one of kindest people in the world. I am so fascinated how Sam can be so focused in competition, also so relaxed as well.
Sam Kendricks joined the six meter club on 24 June 2017, when he cleared 6 meters, and became the 22nd man over six meters. On July 27, 2019, Sam Kendricks cleared 6.06 meters (19’10.5″).

In 2020, Sam Kendricks competed, on a limited basis, but competed well against Mondo Duplantis and Renaud Lavillenie this season. I believe that the men’s pole vault has been revitalized by Sam, Mondo,Renaud and Piotr.

We spoke with Sam Kendricks, while he was travelling in his hometown of Oxford, Mississippi. We had a relaxed interview. Sam Kendricks is a dream interview: he knows his event, he loves his event and is incredibly articulate. We covered a wide range of topics, and I must admit I loved the technical exchange on pole vault runways.

A huge thanks to Sam Kendricks, who is a great ambassador for the sport, and a great ambassador for the pole vault.
A special thanks to Paul Doyle for setting up this interview. A special thanks to Mike Deering on producing #SocialingtheDistance
