DESSAU (GER, Sep 8): Reigning world and European champion Malaika Mihambo became the first athlete to break the seven metre-barrier this summer with a world lead of 7.03m at the Anhalt meeting in Dessau (WACT Bronze). Ukraine’s Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk was second with 6.85m and Nastassia Mironchyk-Ivanova was third with 6.72m in a high class competition. Johannes Vetter only just won the javelin ahead of Moldova’s Andrian Mardare with a sixth round throw of 86.17m to Mardare’s 84.41m while Andreas Hofmann retired from the competition after two no throws. In the vertical jumps, Poland’s Piotr Lisek cleared 5.80m in the pole vault and Ukraine’s Yuliya Levchenko cleared 1.96m to defeat teammate Yaroslava Mahuchikh on countback. On the track there was a surprise win in the men’s 100m for Sri Lanka’s Yupun Abeykoon Mudiyanselage in 10.16 ahead of German Deniz Almas in 10.18 while home favourite Rebekka Haase won the women’s 100m in 11.26. Elsewhere European champion Elvira Herman from Belarus won the 100m hurdles in 12.85 and Laviai Nielsen won the women’s 400m in 52.40.
