A hand timed 100m and an 800m on the grass give Wayde Van Niekerk some positive signs. Wayde Van Niekerk was the finest 400m in the world, and is the world record holder. What can he do? This will be a closely watched story in 2020. We have enjoyed the fine South African athlete and wish him the very best on his road to fitness.

BLOEMFONTEIN (RSA, Feb 17): At University of Free State (UFS) meet here Olympic winner and World record holder Wayde Van Niekerk clocked in his first race at 100 m since 2017 hand timed 10.2 on the grass. He also ran 1:57 in the 800 m with fast finish. “Grateful to see him healthy and back on track doing what he does best,” tweeted his agent Peet Van Zyl. This race was more part of training. But his first real competition of the year will be on Feb 28-29 at regional championships in Bloemfontein where he will run the 400 m. Then he plans two more races before South African National Championships April 23-25.
