TORUN (POL): The hall in Torun in a way exploded when Mondo Duplantis cleared 617 (and was rewarded official WR bonus 6000 USD) and everybody thought there is lot more possible. “It’s something that I wanted since I was three years old,” Duplantis said. “It’s a big year, but it’s a good way to start it. After that first attempt, I thought, ‘yeah, I just need two more attempts at this and I got it’. I was pretty confident that I had it.” He was also pretty alone at top heights on Saturday evening: “I got to pick my heights. For this kind of situation where I could pick my heights and do whatever I wanted, and when I was ready to just put it up to 6.17m, it played well.” He played down when somebody said to him, you are now the best ever. But for sure he can be. Lets watch his three remaining competitions of the winter season (Glasgow, Lievin, Clermont) and first confirmed outdoors the Bauhaus Galan on May 24 in Stockholm. With the help from WA.

ROUEN (FRA): Now already former WR holder Renaud Lavillenie was in the middle of his competition when Duplantis broke the mark in Poland. “I was listening to music, among friends. I tried to look but impossible to connect. I went to see the coach who said to me “Yeah, yeah, we didn’t want to tell you” and I said “Anyway, it doesn’t matter”. It was at the start of the [Rouen] competition, there must have been 5.39 m at that time so I was not yet fully into it. Anyway, I expected it. Then I said to myself, “It’s done, I’m going to do my best.” About the option of clearing 620 he said: “He still has great possibilities. It is completely conceivable, there is no reason that it cannot be in the long term. As we saw in the Bubka era where he could have jumped more than he did. We don’t know where the limits are, that’s also the point.” From L´Equipe. Lavillenie no-heighted at 564.
