The first night left us with the teases of the 100m rounds, and the final 10,000m, women’s javelin, men’s discus and the women/s TJ. Three more days of athletics, what will they bring?
Ince, Orji, Lomong, Huddle
DES MOINES (USA, Jul 25): Lopez Lomong won the men’s 10,000m at the US Championships day one in a fast 27:30.06 PB ahead of Shadrack Kipchirchir (27:47.71) with Leonard Korir third 28:01.43. All three with Doha standards. Molly Huddle won the women’s 10,000m title for a fifth time in 31:58.47 with a big negative split (15:20 for the second 5000m) ahead of Emily Sisson (32:02.19) and Kellyn Taylor (32:02.74). Huddle and Sisson with standards, but Taylor no, next is Marielle Hall who finished 5th and is NACAC Champion. Sam Mattis won the discus title with 66.69m ahead of Brian Williams (65.76m) while world bronze medallist Mason Finley had to settle for seventh with 61.05m but is the third with standard. Third placer Kord Ferguson with 63.25 is not having the standard. In other finals, Ariana Ince won the javelin title with 61.06m ahead of Kara Winger (59.73m) and Keturah Orji won the triple jump with 14.56m ahead of Tori Franklin (14.36m). Only top two in this events are having the Doha qualifier. Isiah Young (10.14) and Justin Gatlin (10.16) and Dezerea Bryant (11.25) and English Gardner (11.28) were the fastest in the 100m heats while Trevor Stewart (44.76) and Mike Norman (44.81) both went under the 45 second-barrier in the 400m. Shakima Wimbley broke the 51 second-mark with 50.87 to lead the 400m heats while Allyson Felix qualified on time with 52.20 on her comeback race in fourth. Also interesting to note the first race of the year of Ronnie Baker who won his heat in 10.26 (-2.0). Isaiah Harris 1:46.87 and Clayton Murphy 1:46.89 led 800 m heats, Rai Benjamin the 400 m hurdles round one 49.61. Best times in women 800 m and 1500 m heats by Raevyn Rogers 2:01.77 and Shelby Houlihan 4:07.35.
