Dacres beats Malachowski, Schwanitz EL
HALLE (GER, Jun 1): On the first day of the Halle Throws Meeting, there were two high quality discus competitions. Jamaica’s Fedrick Dacres went out to 68.64m in the fourth round to defeat Olympic silver medallist Piotr Malachowski (65.87m) and Norway’s Ole Stunes Isene (65.77m) in a competition which saw the top seven all surpass the 65m-line. In the women’s competition, Cuba’s Denia Caballero backed up her win in Stockholm by going out to 65.99m to defeat China’s Feng Bin (64.89m) and European silver medallist Nadine Muller (64.52m) with Chen Yang a close fourth with 64.25m. World champion Pawel Fajdek won the hammer by a clear margin with 79.04m from Greece’s Mihalis Anastasakis (75.16m) and there was a Chinese one-two in the women’s hammer from Wang Zheng (74.89m) and Lua Na (72.71m). Christina Schwanitz won the shot put with 19.23m European lead which was followed by two national records: Sweden’s Fanny Roos with 18.88m and Canada’s Brittany Crew with 18.69m while Canada’s Tim Nedow won the men’s shot put with 20.87m. Elsewhere, Kara Winger went out to 62.08m in the sixth round of the javelin to upset European champion Christin Hussong (61.81m) and Bernhard Seifert won the men’s javelin with 83.05m.
