The Doha Diamond League kicks off the 2019 Diamond League, now in its tenth year. Huge changes are on the horizon, some welcomed, some not, in the 2020 season. But the opening event of the season is quite early in the season, and yet, in this year, with a season six weeks longer than most, the Doha DL has some spectacular fields. We are looking at one, the men’s shot put!

Among the most primal of events is the shot put. It is about big, fast people throwing metal orbits many meters. It is an event that demands focus, devotion, speed and emotion. The field in Doha on 3 May will be amazing, and I am suggesting, no, hoping, for some big throws in Doha!
Men’s Shot Put: Perhaps the finest field in Doha! Ryan Crouser, Olympic champ, has 2 PBS in 2019, including 22.74m! Joe Kovacs, WC gold, Olympic silver, Tomas Walsh, WC gold, Comm gold, Windoor gold, Olympic bronze, Konrad Bukwiecki, Euro silver, Eurro indoor gold with Tomas Stanek as spoiler. Warm weather, cold beer, lots of shot putters, watch Crouser and Walsh break 23 meters.
Ryan Crouser has already thrown PBs of 22.73m and 22.74m in 2019. Crouser had a tough winter, throwing well in Millrose, sick as dog for 2 weeks, and not much training.
Joe Kovacs is never to be underestimarted. He and Crouser challenge each other. Kovacs has a 22.57m from 2017.

Thomas Walsh is a shot put diety. He is extremely confident. He is on the rise. Since 2016, where he took bronze in Rio. Walsh won in London, Birmingham and the Gold Coast. His PB is 22.67m. Never discount him.

One more thing! The shot put guys are some of my favorites. I have spent time traveling with them and appreciate their athleticism, love of sport and devotion, yes devotion to their event. The shot put is on of the cleanest events in athletics, as they are checked when they breathe. The IAAF has clamped down on this event for nearly 2 decades and big guys throwing and big women throwing are watched and tested constantly.
Doha DL could be big. Hot weather, a very fast ring and an excitable crowd could give us big throws!
