Two more medals for Team USA with the silver at 100 meters by Twanisha Terry (11.19) and Taylor Manson taking a silver in the 400 meters (52.28).
Terry, Manson Medal for Team USATF on Day 3 at IAAF World U20 Championships
TAMPERE, Finland — Team USATF scored a pair of medals in the women’s sprints on the third day of the IAAF World U20 Championships, bring the medal count to six overall. The U.S. leads the points standings with 55, three ahead of Ethiopia.
After setting a Championships record of 11.03 in the semifinal, Twanisha Terry (Miami, Florida) added a silver medal to Team USATF’s collection with an 11.19 in the women’s 100m final. Terry was edged out by 16-year old Jamaican Briana Williams, who won in 11.16. Teammate Daija Lampkin (Tuscaloosa, Alabama) was seventh in 11.59.
Taylor Manson (Gainesville, Florida) earned the other medal of the day in the women’s 400m, taking bronze in 52.28 behind a historic win by India’s Hima Das, who became her country’s first track medalist in meet history.
Heptathlon
Anna Hall (Greenwood Village, Colorado) clocked 14.13 in the 100m hurdles to start the heptathlon competition gaining 960 points. Sterling Lester (Kennesaw, Georgia) finished in 13.65, good for 1028 pts. Hall leapt into third position overall with a personal best high jump of 1.83m/6-0 while Lester cleared 1.68m/5-6.
Hammer Throw qualifying
In her third throwing event of the meet, Alyssa Wilson (Howell, New Jersey) earned the 12th and final qualifying spot as she finished eighth in group B with a third round throw of 58.71m/192-7. Teammate Jillian Shippee (Waterford, New York) finished fourth in group A with a toss of 58.34m/191-5 and earned a spot in the final after Canadian Camryn Rogers’ qualifying mark was protested and fouled.
3000m steeple
Air Force Academy’s Hunter Boyer (Lowell, Indiana) represented Team USATF in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase. He finished 22nd in the qualifying round with a time of 9:13.74.
Long jump
Both Tara Davis (Agoura Hills, California) and Jasmine Moore (Grand Prairie, Texas) qualified for the long jump final to be contested on day four. On her second attempt, Davis leapt 6.40m/21-0 to take the overall lead and blow out the automatic qualifying mark of 6.25m/20-6. Moore started out strong with a 6.10m/20-0.25 leap and stayed consistent, qualifying for the final with her third attempt of 6.11m/20-0.5.
400m hurdles qualifying
Florida Gator Cory Poole (Gainesville, Florida) decisively won the first heat of the men’s 400m hurdles as he crossed the line in 52.12 to move on to the semi-final round. Quivell Jordan (Houston, Texas) clocked a 51.75 in the third heat to automatically qualify on to semi-finals. Jordan will go in to the race seeded 13th while Poole will join as the 18th seed.
200m
Khance Meyers (Grand Rapids, Michigan) blew through the finish line as the only man in his heat under 21 seconds. Myers won his heat with a time of 20.70 to move on to semi-finals. In the second heat, Ohio State’s Eric Harrison Jr. (Washington, D.C.) followed suit as he sped through the line in 20.73 to take the heat and move on to the semi-final round.
Evening session:
Heptathlon
The heptathlon continued with the shot put in the evening, where Sterling Lester (Kennesaw, Georgia) threw a personal best of 10.72m/35-2 on her first attempt. Anna Hall (Greenwood Village, Colorado) reached out close to Lester with a 10.64m/34-11 heave. Neither of the heptathletes were able to better their marks on their second and third attempts. Lester won the 200m with a personal best as she stormed through the line in 23.87. Hall followed and clocked a 24.60 for a fifth place finish in the heat. After four events Hall sits in seventh with 3,471 points while Lester finished day one in 8th with 3428 points.
Pole vault final
The women’s pole vault competition came to a close featuring Team USATF athletes Rachel Baxter (Orange, California) and Julia Fixsen (Shoreview, Minnesota). Baxter passed on the first height and cleared her opener of 4.00m/13-1.5 on her first attempt. She struggled to find her groove and failed to clear 4.10m13-5.25/ to finish 11th. Fixsen fared slightly better as she secured a mark of 4.20m/13-9.25 on her second attempt to tie with Finland’s Saga Andersson for seventh place.
Men’s 200m
In the semi-final round of the men’s 200m, Khance Meyers (Grand Rapids, Michigan) slowed to the finish and eased his way to a win. Meyers snagged the third fastest qualifying time of 20.79. Eric Harrison (Washington, D.C.) battled for second place in heat three to finish with a time of 20.86 in the men’s 200m semi-final. He will join Meyers in the final as the sixth seed as they vye for a Team USATF medal.
400m hurdles
Team USATF was represented by Brooke Jaworski (Athens, Wisconsin) and Jurnee Woodward (Vacaville, California) in the women’s 400m hurdles semi-final. Woodward battled around the track and finished fourth in the second heat with a time of 58.20. Jaworski will represent the U.S. in the 400m hurdle final as she powered her way to a third place finish in the third heat with a personal best time of 57.57.
Women’s discus
Alyssa Wilson (Howell, New Jersey) competed in the women’s discus final as the only representative for the U.S. On her first attempt she threw 46.77m/153-5 but was unable to land a better legal throw on her next two attempts. Wilson finished 10th in the women’s discus final and will move on to the hammer throw final on day five.
Men’s 400m
Umajesty Williams (Tucson, Arizona) finished fourth in the second heat of the 400m semi-final with a time of 46.72. Baylor University’s Howard Fields (Fresno, Texas) kicked into gear to take third place in the third heat as he strode through the finish line with a 46.53. Fields qualified as the seventh seed for the 400m final set to be contested on thursday.
High Jump
Daniel Claxton (Nesconset, New York) started off strong in the men’s high jump qualifying round as he cleared the first two heights with a single attempt. Claxton finished with a mark of 2.05m/6-8.75 to tie for 19th. LSU’s JuVaughn Blake (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) had a stronger performance and cleared four heights with ease. Blake was one of ten athletes to clear 2.15m/7-0.5 before the qualifiers were decided and competition was cut off. Blake will move on to the high jump final on Saturday.
Men’s 1500m
The University of Oregon’s Cooper Teare (Alameda, California) finished tenth in the men’s 1500m final with a time of 3:46.18. In a competitive field Teare sprinted to the finish line and ran his final 400m in 56.83. He will continue his effort for a medal with the men’s 5,000m on Saturday.
Men’s 110m hurdles
Cory Poole (Gainesville, Florida) grabbed a sixth place finish in the men’s 110m hurdles as he fought to the finish with a time of 13.74. Poole will continue hurdle competition with the 400m hurdle semi-final on day four.
