Next February, America’s best of Track and Field will be descending upon Staten Island for the first time ever!
In a major announcement, the Sports governing body USA Track and Field has designated the Ocean Breeze Indoor Track & Field facility to play host to the 2019 USATF Indoor National Championships.
Since opening back in 2015, Staten Island’s state-of-the-art facility (led by Park Administrator Lauren Primerano and Director of Special Events Lou Vazquez) has played host to hundreds of track meets, most notably the annual Hershey USATF National Youth Championships, and the World-Class Ocean Breeze Elite Invitational meet.
The National indoor championships, which have been televised throughout the country for decades, will highlight for local fans the appearances of some of the greatest runners, jumpers and throwers in American Track & Field in top notch, head to head competition.
In past championships, legendary Olympic stars such as Carl Lewis, Evelyn Ashford, Maurice Greene, Mary Decker, Alan Webb, Allyson Felix, Matthew Centrowitz and local favorite Robby Andrews have all competed for the opportunity to get on the medal podium as a national champion.
“This is phenomenal news!”, said longtime running veteran, RunBlogRun writer And USATF NY Long Distance Running Chairman Jeff Benjamin. “To have this great event here on Staten Island will only serve to help our Sport’s popularity, both locally and nationally, and especially with the kids.”
More information will be available soon.
