Our sport is about, at its most primitive, competition. One athlete versus another athlete. Such a case was driven into my memory with the women’s 400 meters. Shaunae Miller-Uibo had the lead with 350 meters to go. She looked up at the big screen, tripped on her spike and started to fall back, to fourth. Phyllis Francis ran from the back to the front, to take the gold. Salwa Eid Naser, running a fantastic series of rounds, moved into silver with a PB, and Allyson Felix, who did not have her best race, took the bronze.
Here is the presser on the 400 meter women’s race.
