USA TRACK FOCUS ON NORTHERN CALIFORNIA: PENINSULA & SACRAMENTO IN JUNE
The USA track and field scene focuses on Northern California – and in particular the Peninsula and Sacramento – in June in the lead up to the August IAAF World Championships in London, England.
A 3-week series of meets at College of San Mateo, capped by the June 11 Pacific Championships, lead up to USA Track & Field’s National Championships (Seniors and Juniors) at Sacramento State University, June 22-25.
Adding an exclaimation point to the month will be the June 29 opener of the Track Town USA series of professional athletes in team competition at Stanford University. “San Francisco” is one of the four USA teams.
The low keyed annual Rick Milam(Memorial) Senior Games on May 28 at College of San Mateo were a precursor to the exciting June schedule. The official USATF Pacific Masters Championships are on June 4 at CSM.
That will be followed by the USATF Pacific Open Championships on Sunday June 11, featuring many elite and Olympic athletes (including discus gold medalist Stephanie Brown Trafton and 2016 Rio Olympics high jumper Inika McPherson) – with a full multi-camera webcast by BigPush.org. at the spectacular CSM Mondo track facility overlooking the Bay. It starts at 8:30 a.m. This is also the focal meet of the Pacific Association’s annual $15,000 track and field Grand Prix competition, with double points awarded to event scorers.
BIG PUSH WEEKEND LEADS TO NATIONALS WITH PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIPS & GOLDEN WEST INVITE:
The Pacific championship meet is part of “Big Push Weekend” – which gets underway on Saturday (June 10) at Sacramento State, site of the U.S. nationals, with a combined elite and high school hammer throw competition, tied into the Golden West National High School Invitational. Amber Campbell, a current 3-time U.S. Olympian, headlines that competition – and she will compete alongside some of the top U.S. high school throwers.
–The other events of the prestigious Golden West meet, the nation’s oldest post-season high school meet, takes place in twilight competition at Oak Ridge High School in nearby El Dorado Hills, starting at 4 p.m.
Add to the mix the 10th Anniversary Pride Meet at San Francisco State on Saturday, June 17, just before the national championship competition in Sacramento gets underway five days later.
