Ashton and Brianne Theisen Eaton were feted at the Pre Classic this year. And rightly so. Ashton and Brianne have made Eugene their home for nearly a decade now and have chosen to retire. Wonder how they will contribute to the sport and the world now that they have retired. I have to admit, I will miss them both competing. I also enjoyed how Ashton supported Brianne, and likewise, at major competitions. They choose to lead by example, and that is, a good thing.
Rumors have flown around that Ashton Eaton was offered a sizable amount to reconsider his retirement, but he is looking at other things and that is good. We wish Ashton and Brianne the very best in their retirement.
Having seen all of Ashton’s decathlons since 2011, I have been fascinated with his athleticism, but mostly with his cool under pressure. I also was fascinated to watch him and Harry Marra, their coach, at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, when Brianne Theisen-Eaton did so well. Harry Marra was a near perfect coach/mentor for the Eatons. I am not sure how many other U.S. coaches get the decathlon like Coach Marra (well, Coach Samara, and late coach Sam Adams). But Harry Marra just loved the coaching and time with the Eatons. Again, they taught by example.
We will miss them.
