SHANGHAI (CHN, May 13): Luckily good weather after rain on Friday. Over 35 000 spectators saw in total 5 World leads, 3 meet records and 1 Diamond League record at 2nd meet of the 8th season of the series. The result of the day was the long jump by Luvo Manyonga who 3 times bettered the meet record with last attempt beeing also the best of the DL which started in 2010. Afterwards he said that he plans for 880 in the season. Olympic winners posted World leads (Thompson, Miller-Uibo, Kipyegon), new generation was represented by unexpected winners Lyles and K. Bett. Discus together for men and women was long and with nearly no wind no special marks were achieved. Obiri with superb last 2 rounds achieved 13th best performance ever. Two home wins for Su in 100 m and Gong in women shot put.

100m (non-DL) – After two false starts (dq for I. Young and Kiryu), Su Bingtian won on home soil in 10.09 from Mike Rodgers (10.13).
200m – Teenager Noah Lyles equalled Wayde van Niekerk’s world-lead with a 19.90 PB on his Diamond League debut ahead of LaShawn Merritt (20.27) and Adam Gemili (20.35).
800m – World U20 champion Kipyegon Bett won in 1:44.70 with two-time Olympic champion David Rudisha only fourth in 1:45.36 on his season’s debut.
110m hurdles – Omar McLeod closed the meeting with 13.09 ahead of Orlando Ortega (13.15) in a repeat of the Olympic result. Sergey Shubenkov was fifth in 13.35 on his comeback to international racing after 500+ days.
400m hurdles – Bershawn Jackson set a big season’s best and meeting record of 48.63 in his last season to finish clear of LJ Van Zyl (49.35). Global champs Kerron Clement (49.43) and Nicholas Bett (51.09) were fourth and eighth respectively.
High jump – Mutaz Essa Barshim cleared 2.24m, 2.27m and 2.33m on his first attempts before trying a 2.37m world-lead. World and Olympic champion Derek Drouin no-heighted at 2.20m.
Long jump – Luvo Manyonga improved the meet record to 8.48m and then to 8.49m before going out to a Diamond League record of 8.61m with his sixth jump. Gao Xinglong (8.22m) was second on home soil.
Pole vault – Sam Kendricks cleared 5.88m on his last attempt to defeat Renaud Lavillenie who opened his season with a 5.83m clearance on his first attempt. Shawn Barber and Thiago Braz both cleared 5.60m.
Discus – Philip Milanov threw 64.94m to beat Piotr Malachowski (64.36m). Christoph Harting was only fifth with 63.47m.
Women
100m – Elaine Thompson with super fast last 20 m was under the 10.8 mark once more with a 10.78 world-lead from Tori Bowie (11.04) and Marie-Josee Ta Lou (11.07).
400m – Shaunae Miller-Uibo set a world-lead of 49.77 in her first race of the season at this distance ahead of Natasha Hastings (50.74).
1500m – Faith Kipyegon produced a last lap of 58.43 to win in 3:59.22 from Ethiopia’s Dawit Seyaum (4:00.52).
5000m – Hellen Obiri went to sixth on the world all-time lists behind T. Dibaba, Ayana, Defar, G. Dibaba and Cheruiyot with 14:22.47 WL.
3000m steeplechase (non-DL) – Ruth Jebet set a meeting record of 9:04.78 off a slow first kilometre of 3:07.09 to defeat world champion Hyvin Kiyeng (9:06.72) and world U20 record holder Celliphine Chespol (9:07.08).
Shot put – Gong Lijiao produced the three longest throws of the competition on her season’s debut and topped her series off with 19.46m in the sixth round. World-leader Anita Marton was only third with 18.69m.
Discus – Sandra Perkovic won with 66.94m but she was challenged by former world champion Dani Stevens who threw 66.47m in the third round. Fourth win for Perkovic in Shanghai and in total 35th in the series, also 15 is now her winning streak.
