SABADELL (ESP, Feb 7): Genzebe Dibaba smashed Gabriela Szabo’s world indoor 2000m record of 5:30.53 at the Miting International de Catalunya. Her time of 5:23.75 was also faster than Sonia O’Sullivan’s world outdoor record of 5:25.36. Dibaba passed through 1km in 2:42.65 en route to the record. She next competes in Torun at 1500 m and in Madrid at 1000 m. Morocco’s Siham Hilali was a distant second in 5:52.88 with Dibaba’s younger sister Anna third (5:55.34). Dibaba now holds world indoor records at 1500m, 2000m, 3000m, two miles and 5000m. Other highlights included Adam Kszczot winning the 800m in 1:46.31 from Kevin Lopez (1:46.58) and Nicholas Kipkoech (1:46.89) while Ethiopia’s Tigist Ketema won the women’s 800m in (2:02.00) from Esther Guerrero 2:02.38. Good home wins for Marc Alcala (3:39.99) in the 1500m and Adel Mechaal (7:48.39) over 3000m from Italy’s Marouan Razine (7:50.78). Elsewhere, Luguelin Santos won the 400m in 46.72 from Liemarvin Bonevacia 46.95 and Venezuela’s Andrea Purica posted a fast 7.32 in the 60m.
