AIPS President calls for records change
LAUSANNE (SUI): AIPS President Gianni Merlo has called on IAAF president Sebastian Coe in an open letter to reset the world record books as part of his bid to clean up the sport, informs AIPS. “Given the doubts of the past that plague the sport, I think it would be healthy to begin a new era of athletics that would give new hope to coming generations. I have always been in favour of the suggestion to close the record books in world athletics and open new ones,” he said.
RunBlogRun opines: Gianni Merlo has sent an open letter to Seb Coe, asking the world records to be reset. In all of the stench that has come out over the past couple of years, Mr. Merlo has stated something that many in the sport has spoken about over the past decade. The questions remain: which records are to be reset, some or all? It is the sad thing about the sport and doping: many performances are suspect. There are those, I believe, that are clean, but who decides that?
That will be a hard decision for Seb Coe. I wish him luck.
