The Athens Marathon includes much of the Athen 2004 marathon course as well as the course run in 1896! This is a course that is not kind to marathoners. Many fast men and women have run the course, and the times are modest by modern standards. But, that is the call of the marathon. Many have tried to tame the Athens Marathon course and few have come close. I recall Bill Adcocks in 1969 running a very fast time (2:11:07) on that course. Many consider it to be the best performance of that era: Adcock’s time on Athens course was not broken until Stefano Baldini did just that in 2004 during the Olympics.
