Ashton Eaton and his gold Lunar Caldras, a limited edition shoe, photo from Nike
That Ashton Eaton is the World’s Greatest Athlete is a given. In a tradition that goes back to 1912, with Jim Thorpe and the King of Sweden, the World Champion and Olympic decathlon champion has been known by the “World’s Greatest Athlete” moniker.
Any one who witnessed Ashton Eaton’s performance in Beijing had to know that. His 400 meters on the end of the first night blew my mind. His speed, his focus, and his stride just blew the field away. I wondered, had Ashton given too much to one of his ten events?
Au contraire, mes amis.
On day two, Ashton Eaton broke his own world record, adding to an already historic record.
I found this piece on Ashton and his gold shoe, well deserved, thanks to the Nike communications team.
Be like Ashton!
LIMITED-EDITION GOLD NIKE LUNAR CALDRA
On August 28, 2015, decathlete Ashton Eaton broke the world record at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing. Beating his own world record from just over three years before, Eaton tallied 9045 points while wearing a new Nike cross-training shoe: the Nike Lunar Caldra. As a nod to Eaton’s victorious year, Nike is releasing a limited-edition gold version of the shoe.

“I had been hesitant in moves, but now I can hit a position and bounce right back,” says Eaton of the Lunar Caldra. “It’s like I can do anything from 100 meters to a marathon. I feel like it can take all disciplines and all distances.”
These attributes exemplify Nike’s resolve to always listen to the voice of the athlete. Based on Eaton’s insights following wear testing, prior to the championships, the design team made continual changes to the Lunar Caldra. As a result, it is Nike’s most dynamic training shoe yet, providing crucial, unparalleled support across regimens.
“This is the one shoe you can toss in your bag whether you’re going out for a five-mile run, lifting heavy weight, doing drills or getting after some high-intensity training,” says Drew Conant, Nike Footwear Product Director. “This shoe can do it all.”
The Gold Nike Lunar Caldra is available December 26 on Nike.com and at select retailers. Inline red/black and volt/black colorways of the Nike Lunar Caldra will arrive in early 2016.
