In the story, Consider the Chrysanthemums, Kenny Moore writes of the Fukuoka Marathon, which he was to run that year, being 1971. Frank Shorter was running his second marathon of the year, and would win the race. Moore, then, the AR holder in the marathon, caught a cold before the race that turned his race into naught. In a dream the night before the race, Moore dreamed of running a perfect three mile race, where, as he crossed the line, his body turned into water vapor, and disappeared. After dreaming of the perfect race, Moore woke up, and his fever and cold were gone.
The perfect race.
Evan Jager ran a near perfect race, on July 4, and became the best American steeple chaser in history. That pedigree will be put to the test this coming week, as Evan Jager battles for steeple supremacy with the best steeplers that Kenya has to offer.
The Shoe Addicts put together this video to salute Evan Jager and his rise to steeplechase perfection, or near perfection. His 8:00.45, included a fall, where Evan got up, and with that rise back to running, taught a new generation of American runners that one must never give up.
If you watch that race, and have a pulse, you can not help but get emotionally involved in this fine runner’s battle to challenge his limits.
We salute you, Evan Jager !
And we look forward to seeing you race next week in Beijing!
