Powell 10.01, Eaton 400 m PB, Merritt 300 m WL
ATLANTA (USA, Aug 1): Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell in his last competition before Beijing won the 100 m at Atlanta American Track League meet with 10.01 (+0.1) clearly over Jason Rogers of St. Kitts 10.23 and Walter Dix 10.25. Decathlon star Ashton Eaton clocked 10.47 in heats and was second in 400 m in superb personal best 45.55 beaten just by Bahamian talent Steven Gardiner 45.11. Back to racing was Jamaican hurdles champion Omar McLeod with 13.28 (-0.1) win over team-mate Andrew Riley 13.39. LaShawn Merritt achieved World leading 300 m 31.53 ahead of Bryshon Nellum 32.07. Another Jamaican star Veronica Campbell-Brown won both sprints in 11.22 (-0.1, over Michell-Lee Ahye 11.29 and Simone Facey 11.30) and 22.82 (-0.1, over Charonda Williams 23.25). Bahamian record holder and fresh PanAm Games winner Jeffery Gibson took the 400 m hurdles 48.72 ahead of Michael Stigler 48.78. In women hurdles Queen Harrison 12.84 (-0.5) ahead of Kristi Castlin 12.88 and Lean Nugent 55.63 PB. 1500 m winners were Canadian Nicole Sifuentes 4:06.44 and US Andrew Wheating 3:39.17. Maggie Vessey beat in 800 m with 2:00.30 Canadian Melissa Bishop 2:00.43. In only technical event Melinda Withrow (formerly Owen) equaled her pole vault PB 460 to win over Sandi Morris 450.
