NEW YORK, January 31, 2015 – A world record by Team United States and two victories by Cam Levins highlighted Saturday’s Armory Track Invitational at the Armory New Balance Track & Field Center.
Team USA’s Distance Medley Relay Team of Matthew Centrowitz, Michael Berry, Erik Sowinski and Patrick Casey toured the 4000m course with a winning time of 9:19.93, breaking the University of Texas 2008 mark of 9:25.97.
“These guys built up such a big lead that I would have had to die out there to let the lead go,” said anchor Patrick Casey.
Team Ireland was runner-up with a time of 9:25.37 followed by New Jersey-New York Track Club (9:27.16) and Kenya (9:27.21).
Cam Levins of the Oregon Project won the 1-mile race in 3:54, rested for 30 minutes before winning the 2-mile race with a time of 8:15.38. In the 2-mile race, he held off Suguru Osko, who finished in 8:16.47, Ben Blankenship at 8:16.53 and Galen Rupp at 8:17.24.
Where does this accomplishment rank in Levins’ career?
“It’s up there but it’s still the beginning of the year,” Levins said. “Hopefully it doesn’t rank the highest of the year.”
During the 30 minutes in-between races, Levins said that he, “changed my shoes, sat down for a second, went downstairs for a jog and basically got some water. I then put on my spikes and got back on the track. It went by pretty quickly.”
