Reggie Lewis goes crazy over middle distance races, and the best high school milers in New England have raced in Boston since 1996. Richards, Lantz Set for Girls’ Junior Invitational Mile
BOSTON, Mass. (Jan. 27, 2015)–Massachusetts prep stars Kaley Richards and Olivia Lantz will face Ryen Frazier and Marissa Sheva, the two fastest indoor milers in the U.S. so far this season, in the Girls’ Junior Invitational Mile at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on Feb. 7, organizers announced today.
On the heels of Boston’s selection by the USOC to bid for the 2024 Olympics, the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix will kick off an indoor season in which the city will be the epicenter of track and field in the United States, with the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center at Roxbury Community College also set to host the USATF Indoor Track & Field Championships, from Feb. 27-March 1. Frazier (Ravenscroft/Raleigh, NC) returns to the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix for the third consecutive year. This time, she comes to Boston ranked #1 in the U.S. in the both the mile (4:44.20) and 1600 meters and as the runner-up at the 2014 Foot Locker Cross Country Championships. She is the sister of Wesley Frazier, who won the Girls’ Junior Invitational Mile in 2013. Sheva (Pennridge/Sellersville, PA) finished fourth in the state AAA cross country championships last fall, and 25th at Foot Locker.
Leading the hometown favorites will be Richards (Lowell, MA), the 2014 D1 state cross-country champion and mile runner-up at the 2014 New England Championships. Lantz (Manchester Essex, MA) is the 2014
D2 state runner-up in cross country and two-time Cape Ann League Runner of the Year. Shannon Murdock(Exeter, NH), the 2014 state cross-country champion; Kaleigh Hughes (Needham, MA), the 2015 East Coast Invitational Mile champion in a personal best 5:01.02, #9 in the U.S.; and Emily DeMarco (Ipswich, MA), who finished third in the 2014 D2 state cross-country championships, can also expect strong hometown support.
Also among the top U.S. prep milers coming to Boston will be:
Audrey Belf (Birmingham-Seaholm/Bloomfield, MI), two-time state D1cross-country champion who finished seventh at Foot Locker in 2014 and ran the fourth-fastest prep 2 Mile outdoors in the U.S. last year;
Sophie Cantine (Lakeside Community/Sammamish, WA), ranked #1 in the U.S. indoors this season at 1000 meters;
Malia Ellington (Davidson, NC), the 2014 1A state champion in the outdoor mile and cross country;
Elly Henes (Green Hope/Cary, NC), 2014 4A state cross-country champion; and
Anna Flynn (Ursuline Academy/New Rochelle, NY), 2-Mile champion at the 2014 Bishop Loughlin Games
Among the athletes who have competed in the Girls’ Junior Invitational Mile since the meet began 20 years ago are several athletes who have since turned professional, are Emily Lipari, who now runs for the Boston Athletic Association; Cory McGee, a member of New Balance Boston; Ashley Higginson, a two-time USA Outdoor Championships runner-up in the 3000-meter steeplechase; and Jenny Simpson, the 2011 World Champion at 1500 meters ranked #1 in the world by Track and Field News magazine for 2014. Simpson will be competing at the meet this year in the 2 Mile, and Lipari will run the 1000 meters.
The New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, which has played host to seven World Records and 11 American Records, will be the second stop in the 2015 Indoor USATF Championship Series, and will begin on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 4:30 p.m.
