My arrival to sun and sand in the Melia Hotel and Resort was on Thursday, May 22. I had taken a red eye in from SFO to Chicago, then a sleepy three hour trip from Chicago to Nassau. Specialist Andy Deveraux, of the Bahamian Defense Force, was my driver to the Melia Hotel. Specialist Deveraux had spent a year in Haiti helping rebuild that country.
The Bahamas have over 700 small islands. Independent since 1973, the people of the Bahamas are proud of their country and their successes. Specialist Deveraux proudly told me about the homes of Michael Jordan and Oprah Winfrey, which are nearby, as well as the Prime MInisters.
A wonderful introduction to the county of the Bahamas. One can see, in the pride and love for the country, the nurturing that Chris Brown and his fellow Bahamanian gold medalist 4 x 400m relay team members received as they were growing up, and running on grass tracks in this small bit of paradise.
This is a short audio tape on the sounds from my patio, where, below, a lively Bahamanian band was doing covers of many songs from the States, making them much more fun and soulful.
