KIPSIRO AND KIPSANG OVER HAILE, TIRUNESH CR

MANCHESTER (GBR, May 26): Double Commonwealth Games gold medallist Moses Kipsiro had two reasons for celebration after winning the Bupa Great Manchester Run in a sprint finish ahead of Wilson Kipsang. Kipsiro on a day when Tirunesh Dibaba the World’s greatest ever track performer claimed the women’s title with a course record, fulfilled a childhood ambition by competing against the legendary Haile Gebrselassie. The Ugandan on a Sunday morning he will cherish, sped past Kenya’s Kipsang for a high profile 10km victory by a second in 27:52 to 27:53. Just as importantly he was also ecstatic when finally clashing with Gebrselassie who finished third in 28:00. Then despite denying the Ethiopian superstar a sixth success at the UK meeting which attracted an entry of 40,000 runners of all abilities, he added: „At his age he is still running like us.” The 40-year-old who fell off the pace in the last kilometer produced a World Masters record of 28:00 to supersede the performance of Portugal’s Paulo Catarino who clocked 28:51 in 2003. Best European Sergiy Lebid was fifth in 28:28. Dibaba in contrast never had to extend herself when triumphing by a over a minute ahead of Jelena Prokopcuka the 2005 runner up 32:21 and Christelle Daunay 32:33 who placed second two years ago. The Ethiopian just after a very slow first kilometer hit the front and running well within her ability motored to the finish line looking barely out of breath in a new course record of 30:49. That meeting’s first sub-31min performance erased the mark of 31:07 fellow Ethiopian Berhane Adere recorded seven years ago and was a new personal best by 18sec. Dibaba after a fairly sedate halfway time of 15:40 firmly put her foot on the accelerator lifting her pace significantly for a much faster split as she confirmed her pre-race favourite status. CANADIAN DOUBLE

GOTZIS (AUT, May 26): Canadian duo remained in the lead also after completing their events at the hypomeeting in Austrian Alps (IAAF CE Challenge). Damian Warner, fifth in the London 2012 Olympic Games, scored 8307 points to beat Brazil’s Carlos Chinin, who was second with a personal best of 8182 points while Theisen set a 2013 world-leading mark of 6376 points, just 64 points short of her best set last year when winning the American collegiate (NCAA) title for the third time. “It was an awesome weekend but it was pretty tough. It was not perfect but I really enjoyed the competition. The weather was bad but Gotzis has the best crowd. I was good in the Hurdles and in the Discus. The Pole Vault was pretty bad. The score is good but the most important thing was to win,” reflected Warner. Third US Gunnar Nixon 8136 PB ahead of Czech Adam Sebastian Helcelet who scored PB of 8075. As much as 11 athletes did not finish, including the German elite and Dutch Sintnicolaas. In the Heptathlon, Russia’s reigning World champion Tatyana Chernova won the long jump with 6.57m helped by a tailwind of +2.6 but managed only fourth place with 6284. Second Nadine Broersen 6345 PB ahead of her teammate Dafne Schippers 6287. Eurowinner Antoinette Nana Djimou was 10th (6058). “It means a lot to win in Gotzis. When you are so young, you don’t fully realise how important this event is. Once I get older, I will realise what I did. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the crowd and the music. They gave me a lot of energy. I could not be happier. Everything was almost perfect,” reflected a tired but happy Theisen.

TWO WORLD LEADS BY RUSSIAN WOMEN

SOCHI (RUS, May 25-26): Two world leading marks highlighted the two days Russian Team Championships. Yekaterina Kupina clocked first years and of her career sub 2 minutes at 800 m 1:59.72. She was followed by two veterans Svetlana Cherkasova 2:00.32 and Yelena Soboleva 2:00.62. Another world lead in women triple jump by Yekaterina Koneva 14.80 (+1.9), also new personal best for Universiade winner 2011. In total 6 went over 14 meters, second Yekaterina Chernenko 14.40 (+1.9) and third Natalya Kutyakova 14.20 (+1.5). World junior indoor record holder Mariya Kuchina cleared 192 in the high jump, Irina Tarasova won the shot 19.20 over Anna Omarova 18.66. Darya Klishina leaped to 675 (-1.1) in the long jump, Anzhelika Sidorova cleared 450 in the pole vault, Gulfiya Khanafeyeva topped the hammer 70.60 and Vera Ganeyeva won the discus with personal best 64.30. On the track Yulia Katsura won the 200 m 23.25 (-0.9) and Vera Rudakova clocked 56.01 PB in the 400 m hurdles. Fast 400 m was produced by Kseniya Ustalova 50.84, in the 1500 m former champion Yulia Chizhenko got 4:09.06 over steeple world record holder Gulnara Samitova-Galkina 4:10.49. Natalya Aristarkhova got 9:32.13 at 3000 m steeple (also European lead 2013). On the men side 802 (-0.6) long jump of Sergey Morgunov, Lyukman Adams started the season with 16.82 (+1.4) triple, Aleksandr Shustov went over 227 in the high jump and Aleksandr Gripich over 560 in the pole vault. In throws huge personal best for Viktor Butenko (20 years, 4th in Barcelona last year at World juniors) in discus 65.97. Top four went over 20 meters in shot: Anton Lyuboslavskiy 20.61, Aleksandr Lesnoy 20.60, Valeriy Kokoyev 20.46 and Konstantin Lyadusov 20.44. Except of the winner, personal bests for the other three mentioned. On the track to mention second place of Yuriy Borzakovskiy in the 1500 m (3:42.77, winner Ivan Tukhtachev3:41.77) and at 400 m hurdles Ivan Shablyuyev 50.17 PB over junior Aleksandr Skorobogatko 50.34.

FIAMME GIALLE AND LUCH MOSCOW REPEATED

OTHER TRACK RESULTS OVERSEAS

AUSTIN (USA, May 25): NCAA West Regional meet ended with Charles Silmon clocking fast 200 m PB 20.23 (+0.6), in other race Ameer Webb 20.39 (+0.3). Trinidad´s Wayne Davis was unlucky with wind 13.27 at 110 m hurdles had +2.1, otherwise it would be great national record. Sam Humphreys improved in javelin to 81.90 and Texas AM clocked 3:02.55 at 4×400 m. In women 200 m Kamaria Brown was the fastest 22.73 (+1.2), Tia Brooks improved in shot put to 18.96 and Arkansas was timed with 3:28.92 in the relay.

SBORO (USA, May 25): South African Olympic finalist Anaso Jobodwana improved in his special event the 200 m at the NAAC East Regional meet to 20.13 (+1.7). In other races Aaron Ernest 20.38 (+1.2) and Isiah Young 20.31 (+1.4). In the hurdles personal bests for Eddie Lovett 13.39 (+0.6) and Greggmar Swift of Barbados 13.49. In women 200 m races lifetime bests for Aurieyall Scott 22.52 and Octavious Freeman 22.53. Brianna Rollins clocked fast 12.72 (+0.5) in 100 m hurdles. Felisha Johnson improved in shot put to 18.27 with second Valentina Muzaric getting another Croatian record 17.52.

PEUBLO (USA, May 25): During final day of NCAA II Championships good sprints in favorable altitude of Colorado. In the women hurdles Vashti Thomas 12.70 (+1.8) ahead of Jamaican Danielle Williams 12.89. Thomas was second in the 200 m in another PB 22.75, this was won by US Danielle Williams 22.62 (-0.7) PB (she also won the 100 m in 11.24 -0.7 another PB). Quanera Hayes posted 51.54 in the 400 m. In men events Jamaican wins for Dane Hyatt 45.41 (400 m) and new hurdler Sabiel Anderson 13.66 (-0.7) and 49.49, both personal bests. Jeff Henderson got the 100 m 10.18 (-0.4) and Jermaine Jones the 200 m 20.57 (+0.2) PB. St. Augustine´s went 38.91 in the 4×100 m.

BARQUISIMETO (VEN, May 25): 16-years old Rosbelys Peinado is big talent of the pole vault. She cleared at National Youth Championships excellent 435 cm and is one of the medal favorites for Donetsk World Youth Championships. Her mark is also national senior record and new South American record for U23, youth and juniors.

TEHRAN (IRI, May 24): New Iran shot put record at National Women Club Champs as Leila Rajabi achieved 18.14 m.

KINGSTON (JAM, May 25): At JAAA All-Comers meet talented Jevaughn Francis (born 1995) improved to 45.42 in the 400 m what is fastest junior time in the world 2013. Fast also women 400 m by Stephanie McPherson 50.69 ahead of hurdler Kaliese Spencer 51.21. Oshane Bailey (10.22, +0.8) and Carrie Russell (11.19, -0.1) won the 100 m races. FORBACH (FRA, May 26): Olympic gold medalist Renaud Lavillenie returned after slight injury in bad weather in Forbach at international meet with 545 winning clearance. Pascal Martinot-Lagarde posted good quality 13.49 (-0.2) in given conditions over Dimitri Bascou 13.64 over the hurdles. Solid hammer throwing by Quentin Bigot 75.41 and Alexandra Tavernier 69.52 beating Stephanie Falzon 68.91. In women 400 m Marie Gayot 53.01 as former champions were 4th (Amy Mbacke Thiam 54.10) and 5th (Muriel Hurtis 55.51). Nigerian Ogho-Oghene Egwero won the 100 m in 10.46 (-0.8).

RHEDE (GER, May 26): Markus Esser won hammer at the 43rd International meet in Rhede with 77.86. In cold weather fast hurdles by Czech Martin Mazac 13.63 (+1.9) PB over Dutch Gregory Sedoc 13.66. Nigerian Obinna Metu won both sprints in 10.46 (+0.8) and 21.00 (+1.2). Briton Andrew Steele was the best in the 400 m 46.83 and South African Juan Van Deventer 1:50.28 and 8:08.58. Nigerian junior Bukola Abogunloko won the women 400 m in 52.84.

LONDON (GBR, May 26): Hannah England and Charlie Grice thrilled the London crowds with two tight sprint finishes in the sunshine in St James’s Park this Bank Holiday Sunday as they clinched victory in the first British Athletics One Mile Road Championship. Grice clocked 4:02 ahead of James Brewer 4:03 and Chris Warburton 4:04. In the women race England 4:31 ahead of Lisa Dobriskey 4:32 and Emma Jackson 4:35.

KUROBE (JPN, May 26): Yuki Kawauchi won another race, the half-marathon here in 1:03:58.

GUATEMALA CITY (GUA, May 25-26): Mexico got two men wins at the Pan American Race Walking Cup. Diego Flores at 20 km in 1:24:16 and Omar Zepeda 3:57:52 in the 50 km. In the men 20 km second Eider Arevalo from Colombia 1:24:35 and third Caio Bonfim of Brazil 1:25:27. In the 50 km full podium for Mexico with 2nd Horacio Nava 3:58:00 and third Omar Segura 4:03:11. TOA BAJA (PUR, May 26): At the 28th Carrera Internacional Abraham Rosa 10 km road race here win for Josphat Kiprono Menjo of Kenya in 29:14. He beat other teammates of good quality Sammy Kitwara 29:16, Josphat Bett 29:20 and Emmanuel Bett 29:33.

OTTAWA (CAN, May 26): First Ethiopian win at the Ottawa Marathon as Tariku Jufar dominated in 2:08:05 new course record in cool and windy conditions. Luka Rotich claimed second place in his surprising debut in 2:08:12 with Ethiopia’s Geshaw Melese third in 2:10:24. Best non-African Canadian Rob Watson 10th in 2:18:34. Kenya’s defending champion Laban Moiben, who set the previous course record of 2:09:12 a year ago, was chasing his third consecutive victory and in contention until shortly after the 30km mark. However, shortly after, he began to fade and eventually finished sixth in 2:11:45. Ethiopian women finished in top 4 positions. Winner Yeshi Esayias crossed the line in a personal best and women’s course record of 2:25:31. She was followed by Misiker Mekonnen with 2:25:45, Sechele Delasa third in 2:25:31 and Netsanet Achamo fourth in 2:27:44. Best Kenyan Ruth Wanjiru fifth 2:30:36.

EDINBURGH (GBR, May 26): In the 2013 Edinburgh Marathon Ethiopian Tola Lemma won in 2:15:32. Running just his second Marathon, he was just six seconds outside the course record, which has been held by Kenya’s Zachary Kihara since 2005. Informs the IAAF. Second John Kales of Kenya 2:17:30 and third Nourdine Jalal of Morocco 2:18:38. Kenya’s 2009 IAAF World Championships representative Risper Kimaiyo fulfilled her role as favourite and won the women’s race in 2:35:58. More than 29,000 runners took part.

VIENNA (AUT, May 26): The Austrian Women Run at 5 km had 30 100 participants. Winner Kenyan Joyce Jemutai-Kiplimo got 15:47ahead of Sabrine Mockenhaupt 16:08 and Jessica Augusto 16:09. Fourth Irina Mikitenko 16:14 and fifth best Austrian Jennifer Wenth16:29.
