BAR (MNE, Mar 18): Superb discus improvement of Daegu silver winner
Nadine Muller of Germany highlighted the second day of 12th European Cup
Winter Throwing in Montenegro. She achieved 68.89, had also 68.81 and
two more throws over 67 meters in the series. Since 2000 only two better
marks are registered (69.38 Natalya Sadova 2003 and 69.14 Irina
Yatchenko 2004). Second European Champion 2006 Darya Pishchalnikova of
Russia 63.86 and third French Melina Robert-Michon 63.03. But top mark
also by European Champion Sandra Perkovic who won the U23 category with
67.19 (her second best ever legal mark). Surprise in women hammer as
Zalina Marghieva won with national record for Moldova 73.60 over world
champion Tatyana Lysenko 72.87 and French Stephanie Falzon 72.60. Fourth
Czech Katerina Safrankova achieved national record 71.16. Portugal´s
Marco Fortes who was 6th in Daegu but a non-qualifier in Istanbul won
the men shot put with national record 21.02. Second Serbian Asmir
Kolasinac 20.50 and bronze for Spanish Borja Vivas in life-time best
20.06. Turkish record holder Fatih Avan won the javelin 81.09 over
Russian Dmitriy Tarabin 79.94 and Estonian Risto Matas 78.74. Other U23
winners were Croatian Marin Premeru in the shot put (19.49), Ukrainian
Oleksandr Nychyporchuk in javelin 76.23 and Romanian Bianca Perie in
women hammer (68.74). Russia had best senior teams and Ukraine best U23
teams.
Loyanai fast 2:05:37 all-comers record
SEOUL (KOR, Mar 13): The 83rd Donga International Marathon registered
the fastest ever time in Korea and course record 2:05:37 by Kenyan
Wilson Loyanai. He had previous PB 2:09:23 and this was his third
marathon. Second 2:04 runner James Kwambai 2:06:03 ahead of other
Kenyans Eliud Kiptanui 2:06:44 and Philip Kimutai 2:06:51. Best
non-Kenyan Yonas Kifle of Eritrea 2:08:51 as 8th and best home runner
Jin Jeong 16th in 2:11:48. Ethiopian Tadese Feysa achieved personal best
and was the best woman after 2:23:26. Second Askale Tafa 2:25:29 and
third US Serena Burla improved to excellent 2:28:27 and fourth best home
runner Kim Sung Eun 2:29:53. In the top ten also two Ukrainians,
Tetyana Filonyuk 7th 2:30:11 and Olena Burkovska 9th 2:32:16.
Dado and P. Kirui in NYC HM
NEW YORK (USA, Mar 18): Two-person races played out on both the men’s
and women’s sides at the seventh edition of the NYC Half, with Firehiwot
Dado (scheduled for Boston Marathon) and Peter Kirui getting the best
of Kim Smith and Deriba Merga, respectively. Dado backed up her
surprise ING New York City Marathon victory last November, breaking the
tape in an event record 1:08:35, while Kirui ran 59:39, the
second-fastest time ever here. New Zealand´s Kim Smith finished second
in 1:08:43 –also breaking Caroline Rotich’s one year-old event record
on a different course– while American Kara Goucher placed third in
1:09:12, running most of the race alone. Dutchwoman Hilda Kibet and
American Janet Cherobon-Bawcom would round out the top five in 1:09:42
and 1:09:55. In men´s record Deriba Merga was second in 59:48. Feyisa
Lilesa took third (1:00:45) before a pack of 12 athletes led by Kenya’s
Wesley Korir as fourth and Sam Chelanga fifth, both 1:01:19. Briton
Chris Thompson achieved as 7th 1:01:23 in his debut at the distance
ahead of another Briton Scott Overall 1:01:25 and former NYC marathon
winner Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil 1:01:26. Top US runner Meb
Keflezighi was 12th in 1:01:41. The race recorded a record 15,331
finishers and, according to race director Mary Wittenberg, raised USD

LUGANO (SUI, Mar 18): Great walking at the Lugano Trophy – Memorial
Mario Albisetti (EA Walking Permit) in rain and cold weather.
Olympic winner at 50 m Alex Schwazer of Italy won the 20 km in national
record, world leading and 6th fastest ever 1:17:30. Second European
champion Yohan Diniz French record 1:17:43 and 11th performer ever.
Third Erick Barrondo of Guatemala 1:18:25 and fourth Nazar Kovalenko of
Ukraine 1:19:55, for both personal bests. Also to note 10th Alexandros
Papamihail national record for Greece 1:21:19, 12th junior Ihor
Lyashenko of Ukraine 1:21:40 and 16th Spanish junior record for Alvaro
Martin 1:22:12. 21 walkers went under 1:24 and from them 17 under
olympic A qualifier 1:22:30. Russian World Cup 2008 second placer
Tatiana Sibileva won the women 20 km in 1:28:03 beating Mirna Ortiz of
Guatemala who achieved CAC record 1:28:54 and olympic bronze medalist
Elisa Rigaudo of Italy 1:29:25. Guatemala was strong as fourth Jamy
Franco 1:30:57 and fifth Mayra Herrera 1:31:03 (for both PB) are also
representing this country. In the junior 10 km top positions for
Aurelien Quinon of France 44:16 and Ireland´s Kate Veale 47:01.
Impressive also the 46:43 for Czech Anezka Drahotova in the U18 category
10 km. She was faster than the best boy Marc Guerrero of Spain 46:59.
Kenyan domination
CAPE TOWN (RSA, Mar 18): The second edition of Africa CC Championships
saw Kenya winning all gold medals but two (junior boys individual and
junior girls teams for Ethiopia). The 2010 World CC junior silver winner
and Japan based Clement Langat, ensured Kenya retained the senior men’s
12km title when he triumphed in 35:43. Second Medhin Teklemariam of
Eritrea and third Ethiopian Atsedu Tsegay in 35:50 and 36:14. More
Kenyans followed Timothy Kiptoo fourth 36:26, Vincent Chepkok fifth
36:27. Kenya champion Joyce Chepkurui orchestrated a Kenyan sweep of the
first four places, winning the senior women’s 8km race in 27:04. Second
Margaret Muriuki 27:05 ahead of Emily Chebet 27:06 and Esther Chemtai
27:07. Best non-Kenyan Belaynesh Oljira of Ethiopia was 5th (27:12).
World junior champion Faith Chepng’etich (19:32) kept her promise of
winning the junior women’s 6km title after leading Agnes Jebet (19:34)
and Nancy Chepkwemoi (19:37) in another podium sweep. Injured Alice
Aprot didn’t make it to the finish, denying Kenya the team title. Japhet
Korir lost his junior title, finishing second (23:31) behind Ethiopian
Muktar Idris Awel (23:30). Bronze also for Kenya when Justin Cheruiyot
was close third in 23:31. A total of 22 countries had made the final
entry with Benin being the last country to arrive in Cape Town just five
minutes before the race started after they were stranded in

Longosiwa and Jepleting
SAN VITTORE OLONA (ITA, Mar 18): Kenya dominated the 80th edition of the
Cinque Mulini in both men’s and women’s races, the final leg of the
2011/2012 IAAF Cross Country Circuit. Kenya took the top four spots in
the men’s race Thomas Longosiwa first in 30:04 at 10 km, 12 seconds
ahead of Bernard Rotich, second in 30:16, William Kibor, third in 30:26
and Solomon Kirwa Yego, fourth in 30:36. Best European Belgian Abdi
Bashir as 6th (31:21) ahead of best Italian Gabriele De Nard (31:26) and
two medalists from European CC Champs Jose Rocha 31:59 and gold
medalist Atelaw Bekele 32:17. Priscah Jepleting, world bronze medallist
in the 5000 metres in Osaka 2007 and fourth in the 10000 metres in Daegu
2011, beat Italian Elena Romagnolo by 16 seconds in the women 6 km race
(21:32 to 21:48). Moroccan Btissam Lakouad finished third in 22:03.
Kanda and Kimutai
ROMA (ITA, Mar 18): Kenyan Luka Kanda won the 18th edition of the Rome
Marathon in his new career best and third fastest ever in Rome 2:08:04.
He kept a course record pace until the 30 km. Then the pace slowed in
the final 7 km also due to the strong wind and rising temperatures.
Kanda improved his previous PB of 2:08:40 set in Cannes. Pre-race
favourite Hellen Kimutai took the honours in the women’s race in
2:31:11. Samson Barmao Kiprono, who entered the Rome Marathon with a
2:08:56 PB set in Cologne in 2011, also set his PB with 2:08:52 for
second place. Ethiopian Abebe Tsega finished third in 2:10:47. Kanda
hails from a large family with ten children. He lives in Iten near 2009
winner Benjamin Kiptoo’s home. Best European was Ukrainian Vasil
Matviychuk in 2:16:47 as 12th. The women’s race set off at a 2:26 pace.
In the early stages Kenyan Hellen Kimutai was 25 seconds behind the
leading group led by Ethiopian runners. Ashete Bekele of Ethiopia still
led by 16 seconds at 40 km but struggled in the final 2 km and was
overtaken by experienced Kimutai who crossed the finish-line in first
place in 2:31:11. Second Bekele 2:31:23 and third Russian Marina
Kovalyova 2:31:53. Kimutai scored her fifth win in 24 races.
Sado 2:25:39 PB
LOS ANGELES (USA, Mar 18): Running under surprisingly sunny skies,
Fatuma Sado of Ethiopia won the 27th Los Angeles Marathon in life-time
best 2:25:39. Her previous best was 2:28:01 from last year Istanbul, the
winning time is fourth best in the race history. Kenyan Simon Njoroge
was the best male runner in 2:12:12. Both runners won USD 25 000 for
their first-place finishes as well as a Honda CRV valued at about USD 30
000, and because Sado (17:31 head start) crossed the finish line first
overall, she won a USD 100,000 gender challenge bonus. Informs LA Times.
Second Misiker Demissie 2:28:09 and third Yeshimebet Tadesse 2:30:47
making it a sweep for Ethiopia. Fourth best European Iwona Lewandowska
of Poland 2:31:17. In men´s race second another Kenyan Weldon Kirui
2:13:40 and third Stephen Muange 2:13:50.
TRACK RESULTS
SYDNEY (AUS, Mar 18): The 2012 Australian Junior Championships have
concluded at Sydney Olympic Park with Luke Cann winning the javelin with
world juniors qualifier 73.69 m.
TUCSON (USA, Mar 17): Former world youth champion Shane Brathwaite of
Barbados clocked 13.68 (+1.3) at 110 m hurdles during second day of
Willie Williams Classic.
FAYETTE (USA, Mar 17): Jamaican Gerald Bascoe posted windy 10.32 (+2.6) at Central Methodist Open.
CHARLOTTE (USA, Mar 17): World indoor relay champion Manteo Mitchell
clocked new personal best at the 200 m with solid 20.54 (+1.9) at 49er
Classic meet.
MYRTLE BEACH (USA, Mar 17): Shamrock Invitational saw Reggie Dixon
winning the 100 m in 10.26 (+2.0) and beeing second in the 200 m 20.71
(+1.8). Here the winner Jamaican sub 46 400 m runner Dane Hyatt clocked
life-time best 20.69. Sub 48 seconds 400 m hurdler Johnny Dutch won the
high hurdles in 13.86 (+0.6).
TEMPE (USA, Mar 17): Fast but windy 100 m at Baldy Castillo Invitatonal
was won by Amer Webb 10.05 (+4.9) ahead of Prezel Hardy jr. 10.15.
Former world youth champion Wayne Davis II now running for Trinidad
achieved 13.72 (+2.2) at 110 m hurdles. Jasmine Chaney posted a nice
200/400 double with windy 23.18 (+4.2) and 52.99. Canadian Christabel
Nettey improved to 658 (+1.9) in the long jump. US javelin thrower Sam
Humphreys achieved life-time best 78.19.
WINSTON SALEM (USA, Mar 17): At Wake Forest Open day two Evan Emery (20)
achieved fastest 100 m of his career 10.31 (+0.6). Joanna Currie
clocked 56.74 in the 400 m hurdles.
LAFAYETTE (USA, Mar 17): 18-years old Aaron Ernest improved to 10.31
(-1.8) at the 100 m here and is currently the fastest junior in the
world. Jamaican Jason Morgan got good 63.82 in the discus. His national
record is 64.11.
KINGSTON (JAM, Mar 17): Jamaican 400 m record holder Jermaine Gonzales
started his season with 45.93 at UWI Invitational Meet held at the Usain
Bolt track. Gonzales, who went out a little too slow, covered the one
lap event ahead of training partners Allodin Fothergill 46.22 and Edino
Steele 46.25. In the women 400 m Rosemarie Whyte got 51.86 ahead of
sprinter Sherone Simpson 52.77. In second race hurdles world champion
Brigitte Foster-Hylton came close to her personal best with 53.87 in
second place. Warren Weir achieved good 20.65 (-1.1) in the 200 m.
Schillonie Calvert won the 200 m in 23.56 ahead of 400 m hurdles
specialist Kaliese Spencer 23.62 PB. Oshane Bailey won the 100 m in
10.27 (-0.2) over Kenroy Anderson 10.29. Quarter miler Shericka Williams
(2:15.19) and hurdler Nickeisha Wilson (2:16.05) went for strength work
at 800m. Solid throws by Travis Smikle 61.17 discus and O´Dayne
Richards 19.84 shot put.

LUKOVIT (BUL, Mar 17): Bulgarian CC titles for Khristo Stefanov in 33:16
at 10 km (ahead of Stanislav Lambev 33:18) and Silvia Danekova in 29:56
at women 8 km.
PORT OF SPAIN (TRI, Mar 17): NACAC CC Championships with US team wins in
men and women races. Canadian Cameron Levins was the best in men´s 8 km
in 24:04 ahead of US runners Christopher Landry (24:11) and Elliot
Krause (24:20). Liz Costello scored US win in women 6 km (20:27) beating
home runner Tonya Nero of Trinidad (29:32) and Laura Thweatt of USA
(20:34).
GUYAQUIL (ECU, Mar 18): Brazilian Caio Bonfim won the 20 km race at
South American Walking Championships in Malecon de Salinas with 1:23:59.
Silver for James Rendon of Colombia 1:24:05 and bronze for another
Brazilian Moacir Zimmermann 1:24:33. In women 20 km Colombian
domination, win for Arabelly Orjuela 1:34:30 ahead of Ingrid Hernandez
1:34:55. Bronze for Milangela Rosales of Venezuela 1:36:44. Mario Jose
got another gold for Brazil in men´s 50 km 4:12:52. In junior 10 km
Lorena Arenas of Colombia achieved new South American junior record
45:16. Paulo Cesar Jurivilca of Peru won the U18 10 km in 44:59. In the
junior boys 10 km win for Colombian Eider Orlando in 43:24. In the U18
girls win for Karla Jaramillo (24:49) from the host country.
QUARTEIRA (POR, Mar 18): Ana Cabecinha won the Portugal 20 km walking
title in fast 1:29:53. Second Ines Henriques 1:30:55 and third Vera
Santos 1:32:48. In men´s 20 km the win for Sergio Vieira 1:25:24.
YAMAGUCHI (JPN, Mar 18): Chihiro Miyawaki in his debut won the All Japan
Corporate Team Half Marathon championships in course record 1:00:53.
Second Kenyan Jacob Wanjiku 1:00:59 and third Masato Kihara 1:01:15.
Tomomi Tanaka was the best woman in 1:09:47 ahead of Yuka Tokuda
1:10:40. It was also World Half Marathon trials race for Kavarna in
October.
MATSUE (JPN, Mar 18): Ayame Takaki won the 33rd Matsue Ladies Half Marathon in 1:11:10. It was her half marathon debut.
LIMASSOL (CYP, Mar 18): Russian Yulia Khazova won the 6th International
Limassol Marathon in 2:47:32. Best male runner was home Ahmet Kazahoum
in 2:29:32.
