In an epic 200 meter battle, Veronica Campbell Brown held off hard charging Carmelita Jeter, and Carmelita barely held off a late charging Allyson Felix. Here is how we saw it:
VCB ran 22.22, a seasonal best, and took the gold in the 200 meters, a race she had lost to Allyson Felix in 2005, and 2007, and 2009. How sweet this victory must be!
Carmelita Jeter got her act together and slowed her decompression long enough to hold off Allyson Felix, 22.37 to 22.42, with Jeter taking the silver and Felix taking the bronze.
Shalonda Solmon of the US ran 22.61 for fourth, just out of the medals. Kerron Stewart of Jamaica took fifth in 22.70.

Afterwards, Allyson Felix had this to say: “I am definitely disappointed, most importantly, my body is feeling good. The turnover was not good down the straightaway. Definitely the rounds have worn me down, it just was not there tonight. I will re evaluate the situation for next year because this is the year is to try new things. My mindset was to give it all I could, however, the gears were not there. This is beyond my wildest dreams of doing the 400 and 200 meters. Next year, it is about the 200 meters.”
One has to hand it to Veronica Campbell Brown. She held her cool, focused on the race, took silver in the 100 meters and came back to win the 200 meters. Not a bad couple days in the virtual office.
