What a weekend of track & field! The season has opened with a bang, gently prodding athlete, coach and track fan to note that this is a World Championship year. One is only as good as their last race….now, the road to Daegu is only months away and less than 500 days to 2012 London!
Yohan Blake has come out the door, blasting away, with a wind-aided 9.80 for the 100 meters. Daniel Baily, Mike Rodgers and Michael Frater follow in 9.94, 9.96 and 9.98. Doc Patton takes fifth in 10.10! And WC medalist Richard Thompson is eighth!
Updated on May 10, 2011 for Women’s Long Jump
Nickel Ashmeade of Jamaica runs a smart 19.95, with Steve Mullings,
Wallace Spearmon, Jr., and Nesta Carter, following, in 20.15, 20.18 and
20.25. Mr. Spearmon needs to remember to figure out his start: the guy
was seventh at 100 meters and did not begin to move until 150 meters.
Asafa Powell ran a rough 21.40 for eighth.
Chris Brown took the
win over 400 meters, in 45.37, with Renny Quow, Jermaine Gonzales, and
Calvin Smith in attendance, 45.43, 45.52 and 45.56.
Khadevius Johnson took the 800 meters in 1:46.25 over Duane Solomon’s 1:46.37 and Karjuan Williams in third (1:47.26).
Peter
Van Westhuisen of South Africa won a very tactical 1,500 meters in
3:45.19 over Derek Scott and Rob Myers, who ran to take second and
third, respectively, in 3:45.24 and 3:45.32.
Last winter, at the
AVIVA Birmingham meeting, Andy Turner told me that he was missing the
European Indoors to train in North America and get his 110m hurdles up
to snuff. The European champ outdoors wants to be in the medal hunt in
Daegu. Turner opened his 2011 outdoor season smartly, running 13.28 to
take the race in Kingston. Turner defeated Terrance Trammell, who has
run the hurdles since the writing of the New Testament. Terrance opened
here in 13.39. Dwight Thomas finished third and Antwon Hicks was fourth,
running 13.41 and 13.55. Notice that 2009 WC Ryan Brathwaite was eighth
here, in 14.16.
The 400 meters saw a victory for Justin Gaymon
of Jamaica over WC 07 and 09 Kerron Clement. Gaymon ran 48.54 to
Clement’s 48.74. Running in third place is the veteran Danny McFarlane,
who has legs that could disintegrate (okay, a bit of hyperbole, deal
with it) a intermediate hurdle.
Nice to see the method actor, Adam Nelson, taking the shot put in a good 21.24m (69-8.55) over
Noah Bryant and Corey Martin, in 20.46m and 19.93. Nice to see Adam
rounding back into throwing form. The US champs in Eugene in June may be
the battle royale for the US top three: RBR believes it could take 22.3
or better to make it, but in the end, it who is on that day, and in the
top three.
(understatement). The women with the most fascinating abs (see SPIKES
USA), ran a screaming 10.86, taking Kelly-Ann Baptiste, who ran 10.94
and WC Sherone Simpson (11.07), who took third and ran Kerron Stewart
(11.07), with Marshevet Myers in fifth, in 11.21.
The women’s
200 meters was an epic early season test of fitness. Shelly-Ann
Fraser-Price of Jamaica ran a wind-aided, but highly effective 22.10, to
take Veronica Campbell-Brown, who ran 22.37. Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie
of the Bahamas was the first non-Jamaican, running 22.78, with Bianca
Knight running 22.84 in fourth. Cydonie Mothersille of the Cayman
Islands ran 22.85 and Porsche Lucas ran 22.90 in sixth.
Novlene Williams-Mills of Jamaica needed 50.71 to take the 400 meters,
Rosemarie Whyte of Jamaica ran 51.15 for seconds, with Kaliese Spencer
in third, also Jamaica in 51.30 and Natasha Hastings, the US Indoor
champ, running 51.30. Sanya Richards-Ross, the 2009 World Champ, ran
51.62 for fifth with Dee Dee Trotter running 51.91 for sixth place. One
can see Sanya, Natasha and DeeDee heading home, thinking about how to
improve on the next race.
Kenia Sinclair and Phoebe Wright went 1-2 in the 800 meters, with the
Jamaican Sinclair, running a fine 1:58.41 and Wright running 1:59.98.
Molly Beckwith took third in 2:00.08, with Heidi Dahl, back from an
early season injury, running 2:01.33. Note that Hazel Clark, in seventh,
seems to be running into shape, with her 2:10.20.
Tiki James took the 100 meter hurdles, in 12.88, with Vonette Dixon in
second, running 12.98 and Candice Davis of the US in third in 13.11.
Delloreen Ennis-London dnfed, as did Hali Greene.
Melanie Walker took the 400 m hurdles in 55.60 and Nicole Leach was second in 56.08, with Danielle Gilchrist in 57.67.
The high jump was won in 1.85m by Jamaican Sheree Francis with Deirdre
Mullen in second in 1.85m and Viktoriya Andova (US) in third in 1.85m.
Shara Proctor won long jump with a leap of 6.65m, and the Triple jump was won by Kimberly Williamson of Jamaica in 14.25m.
