Ukhov so close
BYSTRICA (SVK, Feb 9): Ivan Ukhov confirmed his special status in
Banska Bystrica. The world indoor champion easily cleared 238 in first
attempt with space between him and the bar. After that he asked for 244
and first and mainly second attempt were so close, closer than in
Hustopece. He is really the man of the hour to improve the record. “I
wanted to jump it today. There is no specific reason why it did not
happen. I gave my best, but for the record everything must be in place,”
said Ukhov. He also equalled his own meet record from 2010 and also his
world lead of 2011. There was no chance to go for 239 as still two
jumpers were competing. Jesse Williams was also jumping in excellent
mood with first misses at his would-be pb 238. “Maybe I was too excited,
otherwise I could jump it,” said the world indoor finalist. Third
Ukrainian Dmytro Demyanyuk equalled his overall PB of 232 and then was
so brave that he passed 234 and went for 236. Sergey Mudrov and hix
excellent 230 were enough only for fourth. Aleksey Dmitrik battling with
slight injury was 5th (228) and Italian 34 years old Nicola Ciotti
achieved national standard for Paris with 228 (and then tried for
Italian record of 232). Joy also for the Slovak public as Peter Horak
cleared in third attempt 226, national standard for Paris.
