Haile wins
LUANDA (ANG, Dec 31): Legendary Haile Gebrselassie competed for first
time since New York Marathon and won the 55th edition of Sao Silvestre
in Angola. He clocked new course record 28:05 at 10 km and clearly beat
track 2010 10 000 m world leader Josephat Kiprono (28:34) and two
country-mates Diba Direba (28:37) and Deribe Merga (28:48). Ethiopians
dominated also in the women race when former Boston marathon winner Dire
Tune was the best in 32:17 ahead of steeple world junior record holder
Almaz Ayana (32:20) and Rehima Rediz (33:15). Title defender and
previous three time winner Grace Momanyi of Kenya was fourth (33:27).
“Haile felt good,especially taken in
consideration his short preparation time after his injury in
New York,” commented Gebre agent Jos Hermens.

MOUNTAIN VIEW (USA): US Athlete of the Year 2010 is by Track and Field
News hurdler David Oliver with 279 points. Second was Christian Cantwell
(238) only two points over Tyson Gay (236). Fourth Bershawn Jackson
(169) was in close contest with Jeremy Wariner (158) and Dwight Phillips
(157). Seventh place for Bernard Lagat (75) ahead of another runner
Chris Solinsky (70). Ninth sprinter Walter Dix (61) and 10th Ashton

Rudisha and Langat by RRW
NEW YORK (USA): Race Results Weekly, the wire service of distance
running, announced that Kenyans David Rudisha and Nancy Jebet Langat had
been selected the Race Results Weekly 2010 Runners of the Year. RRW,

running results and news, selected Rudisha and Langat for fast times,
consistently excellent performances, and championship medals. “Rudisha,
who was overwhelmingly the best 800m runner in the world, was a clear
choice for our Runner of the Year,” said Editor & Publisher David
Monti. “But Russia’s Liliya Shobukhova, who won both the Virgin London
and Bank of America Chicago Marathons, and Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot, who
scored 12 victories including the African and Commonwealth titles at

Order of Friendship for IAAF President
MOSCOW (RUS): Order of Friendship was awarded to IAAF President Lamine
Diack by Russian President Dmitriy Medvedev on December 29. Writes

recieved it for his efforts in development of athletics.
Home win in Brazil
SAO PAULO (BRA, Dec 31): Best Brazilian runner and former NYC Marathon
number one Marilson Gomes dos Santos won the 86th edition of Corrida
Internacional de Sao Silvestre in 44:07 over 15 km. After 2003 and 2005
he won this race for third time. He was followed by two Kenyans,
Barnabas Kosgei (44:49) and James Kwambai (45:15). Kenyan Alice Timbilil
defended her last year title and with 50:19 improved the course record.
Second Simone da Silva (50:25) ahead of another Kenyan Eunice Jepkurui
(51:42).
Tadese and Augusto in Madrid
MADRID (ESP, Dec 31): Eritrean Half-Marathon world record holder
Zersenay Tadese won the 46th San Silvestre Vallecana, the most
prestigious end of the year race in Spain. He achieved 28:27 at 10 km.
Ayad Lamdassem gave him a good competition as second (28:36) ahead of
Jesus Espana (28:40), Chema Martinez (28:49) and Sergio Sanchez (28:53).
European CC Champion Jessica Augusto of Portugal is continuing in great
wins and dominated in 31:59. 1500 m Euro gold medalist Nuria Fernandez
was way back as second (32:54), third Maria Jose Pueyo (33:19).
Jamaica ahead of 2012 Games
LONDON (GBR): Jamaica hopes that it will be more than just Usain Bolt
who strikes
gold at London 2012 by launching a special programme which it thinks
will boost trade between the Caribbean island and Britain in the
run-up to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Writes insidethegames.
Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) and the Private Sector
Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) have partnered on the scheme – called
Meet Jamaica in London 2012 – aimed at increasing the trade of
Jamaican goods and services in the UK and wider European markets.
The new initiative, which has the backing of Jamaican Prime Minister
Bruce Golding, wil feature a promotional programme of investment
and trade missions, as well as consumer-oriented events that
organisers hope will connect Jamaica and the UK.
Ouedraogo no indoors
BRUSSELS (BEL): Belgian 400m hurdler Elodie Ouedraogo will skip the
indoor season. The Olympic silver relay medalist prefers to continue
her training in South Africa and wants to focus on the outdoor
season. Ouedraogo aims at competing in the 400m hurdles at the IAAF
World championships and continues to lead the Belgian 4x100m squad

Sedoc undecided
AMSTERDAM (NED): Gregory Sedoc wrote in an entry on his website that
he is still unsure about the upcoming indoor season. Sedoc won the
European 60m hurdles title in 2007 and managed silver in 2009 but
will not make a decision about the European indoor championships in
Paris until late January. Sedoc confirmed he is in very good shape
but doesnt want to push training to avoid getting injured.
Liu in USA
SHANGHAI (CHN): Xinhua informed that hurdles star Liu Xiang flew to Los
Angeles earlier in the week for a half-month winter training course. Liu
who recently won the Asian Games will also undergo a physical check-up
during his brief stay in the United States.

TOKYO (JPN, Jan 1): Toyota Motors won the 2011 New Year Ekiden, 55th
edition held over the 7 sections (12.3Km, 8.3Km, 13.6Km, 22.0Km, 15.8Km,
12.5Km, 15.5Km) 100Km loop course, starts and finishes in the front of
Gunma Prefectural office building on January 1, 2011. It was their first
victory for Toyota at the New Year Ekiden, the men’s ekiden
championships for the corporate sponsored track teams. Toyota clocked
4:51:56 ahead of Fujitsu 4:51:57 and Nissin Foods 4:52:05.
NEW YORK (USA, Dec 31): Balmy conditions helped Stephen Furst and
Desiree Davila set new course records at 32nd annual Emerald Nuts
Midnight Run. The four mile road race, held in Central Park at the
stroke of midnight to ring in the New Year, featured its most
competitive pro field in years. Behind the pros, over 4500 runners took
part, many in costume. Furst, 25, who lives in Raleigh, N.C., but grew
up in Goshen, N.Y., prevailed in a three-way sprint against David
Jankowski, 24, of Blowing Rock, N.C., and Bobby Curtis, 26, of Ardmore,
Pa. As the finale of the dramatic fireworks display thundered in the
sky, Furst broke the finish tape in 18 minutes and 11 seconds, one
second faster than Andrew Carlson’s course record set in 2007.
Jankowski and Curtis finished second and third, respectively, and were
both timed in 18:12. In the women’s contest, Davila, 27, of Rochester
Hills, Mich., battled Canadian Olympian and Midnight Run course record
holder Carmen Douma-Hussar into the final sprint for the tape. Davila,
the fastest USA woman over the marathon distance in 2010, clocked 20:51,
beating Douma-Hussar’s course record by three seconds. Douma-Hussar,
33, of Ardmore, Pa., was clocked in 20:55. Allison Kieffer, 23, of

Vitoriana race at 6 km. Osman Abrar beat Amanuel Mesel and both were
timed at 19:16. Third Teklit Tewtabrhan got 19:31 and best Spanish Ivan
Fernandez fourth (19:46). Moroccan Soud Kambouchia was the best woman
(23:02).
GALDAKANO (ESP, Dec 31): Kenyan Victor Bitok won in the evening the San
Silvestre Beasain in 25:09 at 9 km. He was also the best earlier in the
day in Galdakano with 25:01 at 8.8 km. His team-mate Evans Mayoyo was
second (25:11). Ethiopian Fehiwat Goshu was best woman at 4.4 km
(14:07).
AMADORA (POR, Dec 31): Sara Moreira won the 36th Sao Silvestre de
Amadora at 10 km in 33:56 ahead of Russians Yevgeniya Davidova and
Mariya Konovalova (both 35:13). Kenyan Nicholas Korir was the best man
in 29:09 ahead of home runner Manuel Damiao (29:10) and Eritrean Goitom
Kifle (29:16).
DANANG (VIE, Dec 29): New Vietnam record for fast female sprinter Vu Thi Huong who clocked 23.27 at 200 m.
DUBAI (UAE, Dec 25): Bahraini Shawqi Jamal won the 22nd Gulf CC
Championships at 12 km. Best Qatari Essa Rasheed was fourth. Bahrain won
also the teams in men senior race ahead of Saudi Arabia and Oman. Adam
Younes scored also victory for Bahrain in junior 8 km race, but Oman was
the best team. In youth 5 km finally a Qatar win for Hamza Driouch and
his team.
