In a final where the two mightiest lords of sprinting, Usain Bolt and Tyson
Gay, met, the race was sure to be exciting! Both runners got out well, and
Bolt and Gay were even at fifty meters. Then, Tyson Gay began his long
run to the finish, and Usain Bolt gave it a huge effort, which could be
seen in his face as Bolt called upon a body that had been undefeated since
July 2008. But today was not to be Bolts.
Tyson Gay showed the best form he has since 2007 and blazed the last thirty
meters, to run a fine 9.84. Usain Bolt ran 9.97 for second place. Gracious to the end,
Tyson and Usain congratulated each other, proving once again that our sport has
not only the most amazing competitions, but also the classiest athletes.
Chris Solinsky, Oslo, photo by PhotoRun.net.
In the men’s 5,000 meters, who would have believed that five of the best middle distance
runners in the world would be separated by less than two seconds at the end of a very
fast 5,000 meters? Running kilometers at the 2:33-2:38 through four kilometers (61-62 pace),
Mark Kosgey Kiptoo (12:53.46) held off a fast rushing Dejan Gebremeskei of Ethiopia (12:53.56), a madly dashing Imane Merga (12:53.58), victor at Oslo earlier in the season. Eliud Kipchoge, 2003 WC gold medalist at 5,000 meters, was fourth here in 12:54.36. Holding on right behind Kipchoge was Chris Solinsky, who ran a PB of 12:55.53. (Galen Rupp was in fine position through ten laps, and then dropped out. )
Lots of great performances, but you will have to wait til tomorrow to read any more! Remember to watch the whole meet on www.universalsports.com, on Friday evening, or at a time convenient for you (hey, it’s track on demand!)
