It was late in the evening when meet director Ian Stewart finally smiled. Ian Stewart, Olympic medalist, European Champion, meet director, Uk Athletics endurance mentor and his team had a very busy and trying week. Stewart smiled when queried how he could have made the meet better tonight? His distance athletes, Mo Farah, Chris Thompson, both fared well in the 3,000 meters. Lisa Dobriskey finished fourth in the 1,500 meters. Darren St. Clair, finishing fourth, scored a personal best over 800 meters. He noted, with his smile, that the “meet was
pretty amazing.” Tall praise from someone with such standards.
A taskmaster, Stewart loves the sport and has very concrete views of what makes a great athletics meeting. Stewart achieved most of those views tonight: great in meeting production, great competitions, well-run meet, and at least one great match-up! Well, AVIVA London Day 1 had several: Wheating versus Kaki, Dibaba versus Cheruiyot, Olsson versus Tamgho and Idowu, and then, some sensational racers: Allyson Felix in a blazing 200 meters and Tyson Gay running 9.78, in cold, damp conditions!
But what makes AVIVA London GP is all the moving parts: FastTrack, UkAthletics, the sponsors, athletes and fans all work here, and for two days! Even as the weather conspired
tonight to make it arduous for the athletes to compete, along comes Tyson Gay running a
9.78!
And that is how the meet ended, with Tyson Gay running the fastest time in the world for 2010, and a meet and stadium record! What will day 2 of the AVIVA London Grand Prix bring? Stay tuned in a few hours!
