A two-day, well orchestrated athletics meeting, the AVIVA London GP was a huge success in 2010! The sell out crowd, nearly 20,000 each day, were here to see one of the best athletics meetings in the world, and the UK athletics team that took a near record of nineteen medals in
the recent European Championships. As an example, the crowd shook the stadium as Mo Farah followed Bernard Lagat to the finish of the men’s 3,000 meters, in 7:40.36. Galen Rupp set a personal best of 7:43.24, a week after being tripped at 4,000 meters of a 5,000 meters at the DNGalan meeting last Friday.
Allyson Felix Flies around the turn, AVIVA London GP, PhotoRun.net.
Allyson Felix blazed a fine 22.34, taking the 200 meters. Priscilla
Lopes-Schleip, duking it out with Sally Pearson and LoLo Jones.
Lopes-Schleip won the 100m hurdles in a world leading
12.52, after catching Sally Pearson, who sprinted out of the blocks to
a big lead (12.62). LoLo Jones was third, running 12.66, just not being
able to catch up to Pearson and surprised by Lopes-Schleips’ excellent
hurdling. Christian Olsson upset Tommy Tamgho and Phillips Idowu, the
European gold medalist, with his best jump of the year, 17.41m.
Tirunesh Dibaba opens up on Vivian Cheruiyot, PhotoRun.net.
It is all about the competition! Javier Culson of Puerto Rico and
Bershawn Jackson of the U.S. raced neck and neck for 399 meters, until
Jackson took the win in 48.12, to the delight of the
crowd! The women’s 5,000 meters was a battle between Tirunesh Dibaba
and Vivan Cheruiyot. Dibaba won, on a 59 second last lap, in 14:36.41.
Cheruiyot took second in 14:38.17. Notable also was Molly Huddle, who
ran her second sub 15 minutes 5k of the year, with a time of 14:57.93.
Lauren Fleshman, continuing her comeback, ran her seasonal best of
15:13.08.
But the race of the night? Simple. That was Tyson Gay, who, in cold,
wet conditions, ran 9.78 for the 100 meters, destroying the field.
Yohan Blake also impressed, running a personal best of 9.89 for second!
Walter Dix hurt his hamstring, and is in the hospital on Sunday,
pending determination of his injuries. Tyson could have run 10.00 and
people would have said, “Wow”!. Gay’s 9.78, in those conditions, just
added to his mantle as the top active sprinter this season. Remember,
he has beat Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt this season. AVIVA, the sponsor
of UK Athletics and the AVIVA meeting series, noted Gay’s amazing
performance by giving him the AVIVA Performance of the Day for Friday.
Tyson Gay, smiling after his epic 9.78 in cold, wet conditions, AVIVA London, PhotoRun.net.
On Saturday, the weather was always threatening, but the performances
stood out! In the men’s shot, Reese Hoffa ended Christian Cantwells
twenty event winning streak. Hoffa threw 21.41m and Cantwell, who had
hurt his right foot in training on Wednesday and required a painkiller
injection, threw 20.78m with nearly a flat footed throw! Consider that
this season, Cantwell has averaged nearly one meter farther in the
majority of his competitions. Fabiana Murer won the womens’ pole vault
in 4.46m, with Jillian Schwartz, who took second, also with a clearance
of 4.46m.
In the men’s 110 meter hurdles, David Oliver showed his domination of
this event, running 13.06 into a headwind, setting a meet record.
Wallace Spearmon showed his talent, jogging the first hundred meters of
the 200 meter race and blistering the last straightway, running 20.13
to take first. My dream is that Wallace runs the first hundred likes he
means it, as he would make his two friends, Tyson Gay and Usain Bolt,
know that Spearmon is a can break up that power duo. Jeremy Wariner
gave the world a clinic in 400 meter running, hitting the 200 meters in
about 22 seconds, flying from 200m to 300m, to take the leader. Wariner
won in 44.69, taking the hide of the world leader, Jermaine Gonzales of
Jamaice, who ran 44.80.
Dwight Phillips, 2004 Olympic gold medalist, 2005 WC gold medalist,
2007 WC bronze medalist won the WC gold in 2009. Well today, continuing
his coaching relationship with
former Badger Loren Seagrave, won here in 8.18m in the men’s long jump. Morten Jensen of Denmark was second in 7.96.
Allyson Felix was given the AVIVA Performance of the Day on Saturday
for her brilliant racing over 400 meters. Running next to Diane Dunne
for 380 meters, Felix held off the Russian Firova, 50.84 to 50.89!
Biggest upset of the day? Marshevet Myers, formerly Marshevet Hooker,
defeated Carmelita Jeter over 100 meters, 11.01-11.06. Jeter had an off
day.
Kara Patterson, AVIVA London GP, javelin, PhotoRun.net.
Consider Kara Patterson. Last year, she finished fifth here in the javelin. In 2010,
Kara Patterson set the AR in the javelin and yesterday, she took second behind
Barbora Spotakova, the best javelin thrower in the world! AVIVA London GP is one
the few meets were developing British and American athletes can compete
with some of the top athletes in the world!
In the final event, the Emsley Carr Mile, one of the most famous miles
in British athletics, Augustine Choge followed a pace of 58.24 for 400
meters, 1;55.60 for 800 meters, and 2:53.96 for 1,200 meters, sprinting
to a personal best of 3:50.14. Makeonnen Gebrehedhin took second in
3:50.35 and Leonel Manzano finished an exciting third, in a pb of
3:50.64, due to his last lap rush to the near front!
A series of coaching clinics was held here on Sunday morning, this
year, featuring Alberto Salazar, Terance Mahon and Ricky Simms in the
distance clinic. There were clinics on sprinting, hurdles and throws.
The AVIVA London Grand Prix is the only two day meeting in the Samsung
DL, and they gave nearly 40,000 fans in two days what our sport is all
about; great comptetions! Hats off to UK Athletics, the major sponsors
AVIVA and adidas, and Ian Stewart and his team, who combine great
competitions with giving developing British and American athletes a
chance to race against the world’s best. We need more events like this!

Larry Eder has had a 52-year involvement in the sport of athletics. Larry has experienced the sport as an athlete, coach, magazine publisher, and now, journalist and blogger. His first article, on Don Bowden, America's first sub-4 minute miler, was published in RW in 1983. Larry has published several magazines on athletics, from American Athletics to the U.S. version of Spikes magazine. He currently manages the content and marketing development of the RunningNetwork, The Shoe Addicts, and RunBlogRun. Of RunBlogRun, his daily pilgrimage with the sport, Larry says: "I have to admit, I love traveling to far away meets, writing about the sport I love, and the athletes I respect, for my readers at runblogrun.com, the most of anything I have ever done, except, maybe running itself." Also does some updates for BBC Sports at key events, which he truly enjoys. Theme song: Greg Allman, " I'm no Angel."
