The women’s steeplechase is the fast moving train right now. The obvious focus is Gulnara Galkina, who is running in top form. Barringer showed her promise by making a strong move over the last fifty meters to qualify…..
Heat 1
Gulnara Galkina lead the first heat, hitting 1k in 3:08.27 and 2k in 6:11.16, running 9:17.67 to win and qualify. Antje Moldner of Germany ran a national record, taking second in 9:21.73. Sofia Assefa of Ethiopia was the third qualifier from heat one, in 9:22.63 and Milcah Chemos Cheywa of Kenya was fourth in 9:23.87. The U.S. runner Lindsay Anderson, who replaced Anna Willard when Willard chose the 1,500 meters, did not move on, running 9:46.03 for eleventh place.
Heat 2
Jennifer Barringer, the US champion, took the lead and lead through the first kilometer, in 3:09.11. Yuliya Zarudneva lead through the second kilometer in 6:20.69, a slight slowdown to 3:10.59 for that kilometer. Habiba Ghribi of Tunisia took the heat in 9:26.40, with Yuliya Zarudneva of Russia in second in 9:26.64. Jennifer Barringer sprinted the last forty to move from fifth to third, running 9:26.81 and showing her medal potential. Katarzyna Kowalska of Poland was fourth in 9:26.93, her personal best, to move on. The UK’s Helen Clitheroe, who qualified at the Aviva London Meeting two weeks ago, ran 9:41.71 here and did not move on, finishing ninth.
Heat 3
In heat three, Yekaterina Volkova lead in 3:09.60 for the first kilometers and promptly stunk up the track, dropping to 9:43.52 for sixth and not making the final ( she was predicted to medal). Gladys Jerotich Kipkemoi of Kenya lead through two thousand meters, in 6:20.06, and held on for second place (9:29.36), with Zemzem Ahmed of Ethiopia winning in 9:29.36. ” I am very tired, but pleased with this race.” noted Ahmed. Sophia Duarte of France was third in 9:34.08. The last qualifier, running very controlled, was Marta Dominguez of Spain, my pick for the silver medal.
Final for women’s steeple: Monday, August 17, 2008. Larry’s Picks: Dominguez, Galkina, Barringer, Moldner to spoil. Winning time: 9:10.
