The Reebok Grand Prix has just completed it’s fifth year. And this year, from any viewpoint, was, simply, the best RGP ever. The level of competition was amazing! The crowd of 10,900 made this the best EVER RGP and the second largest elite meet in North America. And more than anything, a major track meet had become a success in New York, the media capital of the world.
Tyson Gay’s first 200 meters in nearly a year was a site to behold! Photo by Lisa Coniglio/PhotoRun.net.
The past three years have had weather issues, with last year’s thunderstorms being the toppers. But the meet had an earlier start this year, and the weather cooperated: wonderfully sunny skies, windy, but perfect temperatures in the 60s and 70s!
The athletes cooperated with world leaders, meet records and some eye opening performances: Christin Wurth Thomas’ 4:03.96 1,500 m, Carmelite Jeter’s 10.85 for 100 meters, Tyson Gay’s 19.58 for 200 meters all wowed the crowd. Micah Kogo and Bernard Lagat dueling over the last hundred meters had the crowd of 10,900 on their feet. One of the most surprising performances was Anna Willards’ 1:59.23 win at 800 meters, a three second victory. Watch for Willard over the 800m, 1,500m and steeplechase this season!
RBR will do event by event analysis today, as we fly back home, so you should see events updated all day long! We hope you enjoy! Congratulations to Global Athletics & Marketing, who as Reebok’s Todd Klein said, ” who deserve the credit for developing our meet.”
In my mind, the athletes, the managers, sponsors, all coordinated by GAM, has lead to this amazing meet. It was just over five years ago, in the snow, that Mark Wetmore showed Todd Klein the facility and told him this could be a great track meet! Talk about vision and drive. Last night, all an exhausted GAM staff could do was smile and relax, after a job well-done! Now, finally, track & field in North America has elite meets on the East Coast-Reebok GP and West Coast-Nike Prefontaine!
