AMSTERDAM (NED, Oct 18): The 40th edition of the Amsterdam Marathon was ruled by Kenyans, with Bernard Kipyego successfully defending his crown and Joyce Chepkirui beating her PB by five minutes to win the women’s contest. Bernard Kipyego also set a new lifetime best, his 2:06:19 gave him a winning margin of just under a minute from his compatriot Ezekiel Chebii (2:07:18 PB). Mike Kigen made it a Kenyan 1-2-3, running 2:07:45. Chala Dechase was the top Ethiopian, placing fourth in 2:08:25 in his third marathon of the year. Wilson Chebet, a three time winner and the holder of the course record, had to settle for fifth this time in 2:08:45, his fastest marathon since 2013 when he won here last. Abdi Nageeye set a PB of 2:10:24 to finish as the top Dutch runner, also an Olympic qualifier. That time puts him 10th on the Dutch all-time list. Two time world champion Abel Kirui of Kenya was far from his best in clocking 2:10:55 for 10th. There was heartbreak for Dutch runner Michel Butter, who ran 2:11:08 for 11th, missing the Olympic standard by eight seconds. The three fastest athletes in the race – Tsegaye Mekonnen, Markos Geneti and Jonathan Maiyo – did not finish. Joyce Chepkirui, the African 10,000m champion, ran a big PB of 2:24:11 to beat 2014 Paris and Commonwealth Games champion Philomena Cheyech (2:24:38). Milly Clark of Australia ran a PB of 2:29:07 in her first big marathon to move to 8th on the Australian all-time list. The top Ethiopian was Workitu Ayanu, placing 4th in 2:29:46, her fastest since 2011. The race was run in drizzling rain with temperatures under 10C.

TORONTO (CAN, Oct 18): Ethiopia’s Shure Demise and Kenya’s Ishmael Bushendich took the honours at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon. Demise ran 2:23:37 to make this the fastest women’s marathon of the weekend. It was the 19 year old’s first marathon win in her third race at the distance; her debut came this year in Dubai where she ran a world junior record of 2:20:59. She followed that up with an eight place finish in Boston. Sharon Cherop of Kenya was three places ahead of her in that race, but this time she finished behind the Ethiopian. Cherop ran 2:24:16, the same as Ethiopia’s Warsaw Marathon champion Fatuma Sado (2:24:16 PB). A tie was decided by the judges. Then there was sizeable gap to 4th placer Monica Jepkoech of Kenya, who made the finish line in a big PB of 2:27:26. Next up was Lanni Marchant whose 2:28:09 was just 9 seconds off her Canadian record, which was set here in 2013. The men’s race had a thrilling finish with just one second separating countrymen Ishmael Bushendich (2:09:00) and 2009 Frankfurt champion Gilbert Kirwa (2:09:01). Laban Korir (2:09:20) and Robert Chemosin (2:09:38) secured the top four spots for Kenya. Belay Asefa of Ethiopia recorded his first race finish of the year, running 2:10:32 for fifth. The top Canadian was Eric Gillis, who placed seventh in 2:11:31.

VALENCIA (ESP, Oct 18): The Medio Maraton de Valencia Trinidad Alfonso once again provided fast times, with Abraham Cheroben setting a world lead her for the second year in a row and Netsanet Gudeta running a course record to win the women’s race. Cheroben successfully defended his title, running 59:10, to unsurp Bedan Karoki from the position of world leader. Mathew Kisorio improved his position by one place from last year in finishing second in 59:52. Dawit Weldesilasie finished 10th last year; he moved up 7 places in this edition in running a PB of 1:00:26. He was followed across the line by his compatriot Hizkel Tewelde, an All Africa Games medallist, whose 1:00:31 was just outside his PB. Kenneth Kipkemoi, who was a runner-up last year, was down in 12th this time in 1:01:54. Leonard Komon was also further back than expected, running 1:02:53 for 16th. Ethiopians dominated the women’s race. Gudeta’s brought the course record down to 1:07:31 and was followed by compatriots Worknesh Degefa (1:07:51) and Genet Yalew (1:08:12 PB). Kenya’s Rose Chelimo ran a strong 1:08:54 for 4th, a time that would have got 2nd last year. Just outside 70 minutes was 2010 world half marathon medallist Peninah Arusei of Kenya in 1:10:08. There were a record 10 884 finishers.
OTHER MARATHONS
LISBON (POR, Oct 18): Kenyans Asbel Kipsang and Purity Rionoripo came out on top at the third Rock’n’Roll Marathon Lisbon. Purity Rionoripo, the Copenhagen half marathon champion, won her debut in 2:25:09 with plenty of room to spare ahead of fellow Kenyan Margaret Agai (2:29:12) and Ethiopia’s Bekele Beshadu (2:42:16). Kipsang, the Sao Paulo marathon ch
ampion, triumphed in a PB of 2:09:26, holding off the challenge of his compatriots Samuel Theuri (2:09:56) and LA Marathon champion Daniel Limo Kiprop (2:12:14).
MELBOURNE (AUS, Oct 18): On a good day for female marathoners in Australia, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jessica Trengove ran a PB of 2:27:25 to win in Melbourne, putting her 6th on the nation’s all-time list. Brad Milosevic won the men’s race in 2:16:00. He had a comfortable lead on Kenya’s Antony Ndungo Mugo (2:18:39).
DRESDEN (GER, Oct 18): Ethiopian Neda Muleta won the 17th Morgenpost Dresden Marathon in 2:14:59. Kenyans followed with Vincent Kipchumba 2:15:22 ahead of Edwin Kosgei 2:15:31 and Kandie Kipsang 2:16:08. In women category Gladys Kiprotich won in personal best 2:35:16. Second Prisca Kiprono 2:41:07.
LOCARNO (SUI, Oct 18): Moroccan Lahcen Mokraji won the Ascona Locarno Marathon 2015 in 2:28:29. It was just one week after he was 6th in Zagreb 2:18:56. Croatian Marija Vrajic topped women in 2:52:28. In the half marathon Robert Kirui 1:05:27and Mary Wangari 1:13:05.
BILBAO (ESP, Oct 17): Kenyan wins at the 7th Bilbao Night Marathon. Moses Gaikarira clocked 2:14:50 ahead of another Kenyan Paul Maina 2:18:23 in men category. Beatrice Jepchumba was the best among women in 2:52:09. The race had some 13 000 participants.
GUADALAJARA (MEX, Oct 18): Mexican veteran runner and Pan Am Games medalist Maria Dulce Rodriguez won the 31st Maratón Internacional de Guadalajara in 2:42:49 at age of 43. Kenyan Benjamin Kiplimo was the best male in 2:17:31. Mexican Tomas Luna was second, far away with 2:20:58.
DES MOINES (USA, Oct 18): Kenyan Philip Lagat won the IMT Des Moines Marathon. But the Kenyan didn’t come close to his course record of 2:12:09 as he won with 2:21:02, the slowest winner since 2009. Biruktait Degefa of Ethiopia as best woman achieved 2:33:00 and missed the women’s record of 2:32:28 set last year by fellow Ethiopian Abnet Simegn.
DETROIT (USA, Oct 18): Zachary Ornelas won the 38th Detroit International Marathon in 2:20:23 and will get 4000 USD prize. Russian Lyubov Denisova topped women at age of 44 with 2:41:36 (6000 USD prize).
COLUMBUS (USA, Oct 18): Julius Koskei in 2:16:46 and Loice Kangogo 2:41:44 were the winners of this years Columbus Marathon.
OTHER ROAD RACES
LISBON (POR, Oct 18): Beatrice Mutai of Kenya and Nguse Amlosom of Eritrea were the winners at the Rock’n’Roll half marathon here. Amlosom ran 1:02:38, only one second ahead of second placer Atsedu Tsegay of Ethiopia and, while Copenhagen runner-up Alex Oloitiptip was a bit further back in 1:02:44. Mutai was a surprise winner of the women’s race, clocking 1:09:50 to hold off Ethiopia’s Wude Ayalew (1:09:53) and Kenya’s Stramilano champion Rebecca Chesire (1:10:00). Portugal’s Sara Moreira, last year’s runner-up, ran 1:16:28 for 7th. She ran 1:11:07 here last year.
BIRMINGHAM (GBR): Chris Thompson of Great Britain continued his comeback to form with a win at the Great Birmingham Run half marathon, while Dominika Napieraj of Poland obliterated her previous best by running 1:13:39 for the women’s title. The men’s race was close, as Thompson needed to unleash a sprint finish to see off Spain’s Ayad Lamdassem (1:03:02). Norway’s Sondre Nordstad Moen was also not too far in arears in 1:03:09, as those three led the rest of the field by a comfortable margin. Napieraj ran 1:13:39 to improve her best from 1:19:25. That time assured her the victory ahead of Spain’s Alessandra Aguilar (1:13:55).
HOLE (NOR, Oct 17): Eritrean Awet Nftalem Kibrab won the 10 km road race called Hytteplanmila in 29:11. Best Norwegian was Sindre Buraas as fifth 29:56. Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal clocked 32:35 to win the women category. Second Denmark´s Sara Sig Moller 33:27.
IVANO-FRANKIVSK (UKR, Oct 18): Four athletes finished under 4 hours over 50 km at national race walk Championships. Andriy Hrechkovskyy won with 3:53:53 (the best result
in both U23 and senior categories) ahead of Ihor Sakharuk 3:55:34. 21-year-old Maryan Zakalnytskyy debuted at 50km with 3:57:18 to take third place and Volodymyr Hontsovskyy clocked 3:57:56 PB for fourth.
CREMONA (ITA, Oct 17): In North Italian Half Marathon (14th) edition despite bad weather solid 1:01:33 winning time for Kenyan Solomon Kirwa Yego. Second Bernard Bett 1:01:58 and third Ethiopian Zewedu Haile 1:02:06. Also on women side Alice Kimutai 1:11:14 and Martha Akeno 1:12:15 made it for Kenyan 1-2.
PETTINENGO (ITA, Oct 18): Kenyan Cornelius Kangogo won the 45th Giro Podistico road race in 26:34 at 9.6 km. Second Ethiopian favorite Edris Muktar 26:34 after close finish. Third Robert Cheruiyot 27:00 and fourth Bernard Muia 27:14 ahead of Eritrean Miebale Andemicael 27:16. Best European was Ukrainian Vasyl Matviychuk 28:18 as 9th. In women race (4 km) World junior medalist 2014 Alemitu Hawi won in 12:41 ahead of Carolyn Jepkosgei 12:58. Third Czech Kristina Maki 13:03 and fourth best Italian Federica Dal Ri 13:07.
APATIN (SRB, Oct 18): Turkish wins at the Balkan Half Marathon Championships. Medeni Demir 1:06:58 and Burcu Buyukbezgin 1:17:51.
TAKASHIMADAIRA (JPN, Oct 18): Some 1430 people ran in the 40th anniversary Takashimadaira Road Race on a 5 km loop course in northwestern Tokyo. In the men’s race Yuki Kawauchi broke away on the last lap for a solo win in 1:00:57 just a week after setting a course record at the Kitakami Marathon. His next race is the Nov. 1 TCS New York City Marathon, followed by the Dec. 6 Fukuoka International Marathon where he hopes to secure a place on the Rio Olympic team. Second Koichi Miyashita 1:01:25 and third Kento Ando 1:01:30. Informs Brett Larner.
TOKYO (JPN, Oct 17): Another week, another world record-setting Japanese collegiate race. Virtually every major Japanese university men’s distance race since Tokyo won the 2020 Olympic bid has seen incredible new course records and world records set for depth at quality. Saturday´s 92nd Hakone Ekiden Yosenkai, the 20 km road race qualifier for the season-capping January 2-3 Hakone Ekiden, was no exception. After heavy rain with 5 minutes to go 2015 Kanto Region DI Half Marathon champion Daniel Muiva Kitonyi from Nihon University, 2nd in 58:00 in his last Yosenkai appearance two years ago, made sure things got off right by taking the field through the 1st km in 2:51. A large group went with him, but when they hit 3 km without the pace slackening all let go to leave Kitonyi alone on track to break the 57:01 course record. He won at the end with 58:20 ahead of Workneh Derese 59:10 and Stanley Siteki 59:14. From Brett Larner.
IMOLA (ITA, Oct 18): Ivana Iozzia in 56:19 won the women category at 15.3 km during the Giro Tre Monti at Ferrari Autodromo. Second Gloria Marconi 56:44 and third Laura Giordano 56:56. Moroccan Jouad Zain clocked 47:14 to win men race ahead of Ezekiel Meli of Kenya 47:31.
NIORT (FRA. Oct 18): Stephen Ogari achieved another win in France, this time at the 26th Semi Marathon de la Coulee Verte in Niort. He clocked 1:02:45 over Matthew Sang 1:03:02 and Kevin Kipkemoi 1:03:57. Ukrainian Svitlana Stanko was the best woman in 1:14:55 ahead of Martha Komu 1:15:23.
ST. WOLFGANG (AUT, Oct 18): Kenyan Hosea Tuei won for 7th time the Run around Wolfgangsee at 27 km. In the 44th edition he was timed with 1:30:30. Second Hillary Kiptum only one second behin 1:30:31 and third Edwin Kipkurui 1:31:03. In women category Stellah Barsosio 1:47:37 clearly ahead of Pauline Eapan, both of Kenya 1:49:21. Record participation of 4700 runners from 40 countries.
CURITIBA (BRA, Oct 18):Brazilian wins at the 10 km race in Curitiba with Maria Aparecida 35:01 and Altobeli Santos 29:21.
BURNIE (AUS, Oct 18): Brett Robinson in 29:06 (ahead of David McNeill 29:11) and Victoria Mitchell 33:58 were the winners of the Burnie´s Ten road race at 10 km in Tasmania.
