This was as strange as they come for a World Champs marathon. Ruggero Pertile, from Italy lead early, with Daniele Meucci, the 2014 European Champion, testing his legs a bit. Then, Lesotho’s Tsepo Mathibelle took the lead and charged away until 1:50, when Ghirmay Ghebreselassie and Yemane Tsegay went by.

Yemane Tsegay went by Ghebreslassie, but the young Eritrean went by, and that was that. In 2:12.27, Ghirmay Ghebreslassie won the first gold medal for Eritea. Tadesse Zadese had won silver in the 10,000 meters before, but no gold for the new country.

A word on the age of Mr. Ghebreslassie. Many are noting he is 19, but we have now recieved reports that he is between 20 and 25. It is an issue as there are still countries who do not keep great records on such information. Whatever the case, this young man has burst on the marathon scene and upset the likes of Wilson Kipsang, Dennis Kimetto, who both dropped out, and Stephen Kiprotich, the 2012 Olympic champion.
