NEXT YEAR SO FAR CHEBOKSARY AND BAKU

BRAUNSCHWEIG (GER): Next years 6th edition of the European Team Championships will be held on June 20-21 in Cheboksary, Russia. The organisers staged in Braunschweig a press conference and informed mainly about the transport issues, most of the teams will fly via Moscow to the capitol of Chuvashya. Also a kids competition will be organised in the region with the finals in the pre-programme of the Championships. The places for First and Second Leagues will be decided later but as it was already announced Third League will be staged in Baku, Azerbaijan as part of inaugural European Games.

BRAUNSCHWEIG BEST EVER

BUDAPEST (HUN): In the All-Athletics.com scoring this years 5th edition of European Team Championships in Braunschweig was the best so far with 171 041 score. So far the best was Stockholm in 2011 with 170 772 points. Also the Second League this year in Riga is the best from all editions with 152 661 points, until this year the best was Novi Sad in 2011 with 152 344 points. So far the top score from First League has Izmir 2011 with 160 778, this year Tallinn scored 159 444 points.

RUTHERFORD THINKS SKELETON

BRUSSELS (BEL): Long jump olympic winner and current world leader Greg Rutherford dreams about participating at the Winter Olympic Games. He said that in an interview with sport.be TV. „I’m a big fan of the event,” said Rutherford. „I’m going to try in the skeleton. If I’m right, I’ll go!”  In addition, Rutherford has another challenge: in October the long jumper should be for the first time father.

ADAMS 10.01 AND 20.08 NR

BASSETERRE (SKN, Jun 22): Antoine Adams showed top sprinting shape at the St. Kitts national championships when winning the 100 m in 10.01 (0.0) and 200 m in 20.08 (+1.6). In the 100 m he equaled his best from last year nationals and in the 200 m improved his national record. Second Jason Rogers 10.04 and third Brijesh Lawrence 10.16. In the 200 m second Lawrence 20.37. Leastrod Roland won the 400 m in 46.41 PB and Marecia Pemberton women 100 m in 11.49 (+1.2).

BTE AND LASHAWN FOR EDMONTON

EDMONTON (CAN):  World Championship Silver Medalist Brianne Theisen-Eaton of Canada and Olympic Champion LaShawn Merritt of USA announced as latest headliners at the Edmonton International Track Classic on July 6. They are joining other stars already announced Justin Gatlin for 100 m and Warren Weir for the 200 m. Also confirmed for this year’s event is young Canadian sprinter Aaron Brown, who captured the bronze medal in the 4X100m relay at last year’s World Championships. He’ll compete in the 200m against Weir and American Wallace Spearmon. Athletes announced in the last few weeks include Canadian high jump star Derek Drouin, hurdler Angela Whyte of Edmonton, Olympic silver medalist Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic and Olympic gold medalist Francena McCorory of the US, who will both run in the 400m of their respective events.

OBERGFOLL IS MOTHER

OFFENBURG (GER): The javelin boy was born during the weekend. Mother is last year World champion Christina Obergfoll and father former World medalist Boris Henry. The name of the boy is Marlon Obergfoll. Also the father changed his name at the wedding last year to Boris Obergfoll. She plans to return to competition in time for Rio 2016 Games.

VANCOUVER (CAN): The miracle mile at the Vancouver Sun Harry Jerome Track Classic on July 10 will see Jordan McNamara of Oregon Track Club take on Canada’s Nate Brannen, inform organisers. McNamara ran 3:52.42 at this year’s Prefontaine Classic, meaning he could be in shape to challenge the meet record of 3:52.59 set by Mike Hillardt of Australia 30 years ago. Also in the field is sub 4 indoor miler Luc Bruchet.

ST-PETERSBURG (RUS): World silver medallist 2011 in high jump Aleksey Dmitrik hopes that he can achieve his this year indoor results and reach 240 level in the summer. “Maybe, after 240 indoor I inclined myself that I can do whatever I want but life shows me that I have to make a lot of effort to replicate the success. I think it’s possible to achieve 240 this summer as well. I just need to believe in it and find the right way to prepare for the competitions. My top priority task for now is to get me back to the condition when I realized that I could jump high,” said 30-year-old Russian to R-Sport news agency. Dmitrik plans to compete at Lausanne Diamond League event and at national championships in Kazan to be selected for the European champs in Zurich.

WEINHEIM (GER): Weinheim planned after Kurpfalz Gala end of May to stage another top event in the Sepp Herberger Stadium, but the national qualification meet for European Championships scheduled for June 28 was canceled.

TOKYO (JPN): Brett Larner informs that comedian Hiroshi Neko (36) has been named to the Cambodian national team for this autumn’s Incheon Asian Games in the marathon according to a June 22 press release from his management.  Neko, a Cambodian citizen, holds the all-time second-best Cambodian time of 2:30:26.  The Asian Games will be his third time being named to a Cambodian team for an international championships.  Neko commented, „I will do everything I can in training for the three months until the main event, and I will show everyone my best running there.”

PRAHA (CZE): Decathlon legend Roman Sebrle was special guest last week at the Ostrava Golden Spike meeting and in the car parade during the opening ceremony was in a car with Ashton Eaton, the man who improved his world record. He is devoting his sporting activities to golf but recently accepted a media project. With Czech Miss he should be the presenter of the daily news in the Czech private channel Prima.

CORK (IRL): 2006 World Indoor 60mH champion Derval O’Rourke has announced her retirement from competitive athletics, report irishtimes.com. The 33 year old had originally planned to compete in the European Championships, where she has twice won silver, but her training has been hampered by injury and she would not compete if she was not in shape to be in medal contention.

BATH (GBR): Dai Greene is not yet fit enough to compete at this weekend’s British Championships but he still hopes to be selected for the European Championships, report walesonline.co.uk. He plans to start competing in July, and run a qualifying time by July 14.

SACRAMENTO (USA): 2008 Olympic discus champion Stephanie Brown Trafton says that she feels in shape to throw 60 to 62 metres at the USA Outdoors, reportcapradio.org. The 34 year old American says that she has been aiming to peak at the US championships after having a baby last year. Her best so far this year is 59.33.

KINGSTON (JAM): Yohan Blake ‘s manager Cubie Seegobin has confirmed that the Commonwealth Games are not in the plans of former 100m World champion Yohan Blake, report Jamaica-gleaner.com. “It was something that we were looking at for a long time but in the end, the team decided that they would do what’s in the best interest of the athlete,” Seegobin said. He added that Blake is healthy and capable to run fast, but as the next three year’s feature global championships, he will only race 7 or 8 races in 2014. He is scheduled for Lausanne, Glasgow and London street event.

LEOPOLDSBURG (BEL): Belgium’s European Junior cross country silver medallist Isaac Kimeli has been offered a contract with the military, reportnieuwsblad.be. The 20 year old will undergo military training in Leopoldsburg in September and October and after this he must work for half a day once a week. Kimeli will be able to use the rest of his time to dedicate to training. He is expected to compete at the World Military Games next year in South Korea.

PARIS (FRA): World Junior pole vault champion Angelica Bengtssonn should be ready to compete in time for the European Championships, report expressen.se. The Swede, who will turn 21 on July 8, is still not jumping and is still experiencing both leg and arm pain. Scans show that she has inflammation at both injury sites, but nothing serious. She says that although injury has held her back this year, she has made progress in training with her new coach.

ALEKSANDROW LODZKI (POL, Jun 21): Konrad Bukowiecki good shot put shape 21.98 (5 kg) and 20.62 (6 kg).

TEGUCIGALPA (HON, Jun 22): Guatemala with 116.5 points was the best country at Central American Championships ahead of Costarica 109.5. Alexander Bowen won high jump with national record for Panama 216 cm.

PORT OF SPAIN (TTO, Jun 22): Last day of Trinidad and Tobago Championship had Michelle Lee-Ahye won the 200 m in 22.95 (-1.3) but clocked 22.77 PB (-1.1) in heats. Lalonde Gordon with 20.38 (-2.2) won the men final over another 400 m specialist Renny Quow 20.41. Emanuel Mayers was the surprise winner of 400 m hurdles 49.57 PB ahead of World Champion Jehue Gordon 49.69. Cleopatra Borel-Brown achieved 18.63 when winning women shot put. Junior national teams tested in relays, in the 4×100 m boys 40.50 and girls 44.99, in the 4×400 m boys 3:11.10.

WATERFORD (BAR, Jun 21-22): During first day of Barbados National Championships Shane Brathwaite won the 110 m hurdles in 13.37 just ahead of Greggmar Swift 13.39. Defending champion and World gold winner 2009 Ryan Brathwaite, who has been nursing heel spurs for several months, aggravated the injury in the prelims and did not run in the final. That was just one highlight of the night which saw 19-year-old CARIFTA long jump champion Shamar Rock break David Caddle’s long-standing national record in the men’s long jump. The 777 was set in 1988 before Rock was born and he leaped to 784 metres on his final attempt, also erasing Kevin Bartlett’s junior mark of 767 set on June 25, 2000.
