On February 1, Genzebe Dibaba ran 3:55.17 for the 1,500 meters in Karlsruhe, Germany, destroying the WR by over two seconds! Five nights later, on Thursday February 6, 2014, in Stockholm, Sweden, Genzebe Dibaba ran 8:16.60 for the 3,000 meters, obliterating the former record by nearly seven seconds!
The Dibaba name should be familiar to you. Genzebe is one of the three Dibaba sisters. Her sister, Tirunesh Dibaba is three times Olympic champion, and Ejegayehu Dibaba, the Olympic silver medalist. And don’t forget their cousin, Derartu Tulu, who is also a former Olympic champion.
Sweden, Genzebe Dibaba ran 8:16.60 for the 3,000 meters, obliterating the former record by nearly seven seconds. But, Genzebe was not finished. On February 15, 2014, in Birmingham, England’s National Indoor Stadium, with a standing room only crowd, Genzebe Dibaba ran the fastest two mile time ever run by a women! Running 9:00.60 for eight laps on the 200 meter Mondo track, Genzebe Dibaba broke the world record by just over six seconds!
