Farah beats them
BIRMINGHAM (GBR, Jun 30): Sunny but windy before packed Alexander Stadium, the Sainsbury´s Grand Prix, 7th IAAF Diamond League meet of the year. Home stars pleased the crowds (Farah, Ohuruogu but also Dasaolu, Shakes-Drayton, Judd, Rutherford). In summary no world lead this time, 3 European leads (Bondarenko, Tamgho, Porter) and 2 meet records (Bondarenko, Chemos). Surprise losses for Merritt, Tinsley, Whiting, Fraser-Pryce and Suhr. Nothing is for granted could be the motto before the World Championships in Moscow.

100 m: Carter on the outside sub 10 (9.99, +0.8) with Dasaolu 10.03 PB (first PB in heats 10.05 -1.3) and Collins 10.06 (did not had his usual flying start).
800 m: Aman as expected in 1:45.18.
1500 m (non DL): Wote 3:35.99 over Iguider 3:36.23 in African affair, interesting Tahri 4th 3:36.87.
5000 m: Farah was attacked by Alamirew and Gebrhiwot, but he managed fast or slow, but last 400 m in 53.40. Final time 13:14.24.
110mH: Brathwaite beat Merritt after great start 13.13 (+2.6) to 13.22. Noga is improving with every race 3rd 13.32.
400mH: Culson started fast and remained in lead until the end 48.59, first loss for Tinsley 3rd 48.94, opener for Sanchez 7th 49.68
HJ: Bondarenko like from another planet (did not want to continue jumping in Ostrava) with superb clearances at 231, 234 and 236 his PB, EL and equaled MR of Sotomayor and Smith. Kynard in pro debut 234, Grabarz 231.
LJ: Menkov is ruling his 827(+0.6) and 826 enough to win, then home stars Rutherford 811 and Tomlinson 797.
TJ: Taylor 2nd best mark of 2013 17.66 (+0.9), Tamgho 17.47 (+0.3) EL and five fouls, some of them very long.
SP: Hoffa better than Whiting 21.34 and 20.89. Nothing is for granted.
JT: Thorkildsen first big win of the season 83.26, Vesely groin problems.
Women
200 m: Okagbare showed the favorites the shape in 22.55 (+0.9) over Shelly-Ann 22.72. Jeter is not ready yet after the injury (23.36).
400 m: Crowd pleaser – superb finish of Ohuruogu 50.63 and Montsho ended her winning streak 50.64.
800 m (non-DL): Judd confirmed her talent with 1:59.85 PB and win, she is clear favorite for Eurojuniors in Rieti.
1500 m: Aregawi controlled it and has four wins now in the series (4:03.70, last lap 58.93).
100mH: Top four were in 0.09. Harper-Nelson won in 12.64 (-0.5) over Wells 12.67, Porter 12.72 EL and Pearson 12.73.
400mH (non-DL): PSD improved her season best to 53.82 over Child 54.22 PB.
Steeple: Chemos second win in a row after Ostrava in similar time 9:17.43 MR. World leader Chepkirui beaten to 4th.
PV: Silva 473 beat them Murer 463, Suhr 453.
DT: Perkovic as usual 64.32 and has four wins out of four.
Kondratyeva 77.13 hammer WL
ZHUKOVSKIY (RUS, Jun 30): The 55th edition of the oldest meeting in Russia (Znamensky Memorial, EA Classic) world lead in women hammer by Oksana Kondratyeva 77.13 (also PB and 6th best performer ever). Second Anna Bulgakova 72.03 as Tatyana Lysenko did not compete. In windy conditions Olympic gold medalist Mariya Savinova won the 800 m in 2:00.67. Top three equaled the meet record in women pole vault with 450 as Anastasiya Savchenko won, second Angelina Krasnova and third Anzhelika Sidorova. Svetlana Feofanova was fourth 440. Good quality triple win for Yekaterina Koneva 14.57 (+0.6). In the 400 m hurdles Ukrainian Hana Titimets clocked 54.84 over Euro champ Irina Davydova 56.26. Yulia Gushchina opened with 51.82 400 m win. Ukrainain sprint wins for Yekaterina Pogrebnyak 11.39 (-0.2), Hrystyan Stuy 23.31 (+1.1) and on the men side Serhiy Smelyk 10.20 (+3.0) ahead of Ihor Bodrov 10.28 and Lithuanian Rytis Sakalauskas 10.29. Rafal Omelko from Poland won the 400 m in 46.24 PB. Sergey Litvinov dominated in hammer with season best 78.80 over Aleksey Zagorniy 76.35. Other winners Timofey Chalyy 50.45 at 400 m hurdles, Valeriy Kokoyev 19.86 in shot, Ukrainian Viktor Yastrebov 16.53 (+2.8) in triple and Romanian guest Ioan Zaizan 3:41.66 in the 1500 m.

TALLINN (EST, Jun 30): France won the Super League with 41 421 points (new format when men and women scores are together making one score for each team) ahead of Russia 41 032 and just 5 points behind Estonia 41 027. Fourth Belarus 40 175, fifth Poland 38 763 over Great Britain 38 653, last two places for Ukraine 37 850 and Italy 37 617. Kevin Mayer won the decathlon for France 8390 ahead of Belarus Eduard Mikhan 8125, home Mikk Pahapill 8099 and Russian Artyom Lukyanenko 8067. Poland´s Karolina Tyminska topped the heptathlon with 6347 over Hanna Melnychenko 6260, Estonian Grit Sadeiko 6221 PB and European Champion Antoinette Nana Djimou 6104. NOTTWIL (SUI, Jun 30): European champion Eelco Sintnicolaas of Netherlands dominated the decathlon in the First League with 8322 points, second Mickael Wiberg of Sweden far back 7678. In the heptathlon also Dutch win for Nadine Broersen 6238 ahead of Czech Eliska Klucinova 6013 and home Ellen Sprunger 5987. Netherlands 40 749 (would be enough for 4th in the Super League) and Switzerland 38 767 are promoted, next in ranking Czech Republic 38 291, Sweden 38 274, Finland 37 362 and Spain 36 885 with Hungary 32 283.
RIBEIRA BRAVA (POR, Jun 30): In the Second League only three teams were registered, win for Norway 37 298 over Portugal 36 250 and Romania 34 895. Decathlon winner Lars Rise of Norway scored 7621 points ahead of home Tiago Marto 7603. Croatian record for Lucija Cvitanovic 5547 to win the heptathlon as the overnight leader Beatrice Puiu from Romania managed only 427 cm in the long jump and finished 5th (5446).

KINGSTON (JAM): Jamaica Observer informs that Yohan Blake will not defend his 100 m title at the World Championship in Moscow. Blake pulled from Jamaica’s National Athletic Championships. “He is definitely out of the World Championship … he will not be part of Jamaica’s squad,” a senior athletics official told the SundayObserver. “Yohan will have to do surgery soon, so there is no way that he can make the team. The injury is so sensitive that even if he is a real ‘Beast’ he cannot recover from it in time for the World Champs,” the official said. However, president of the Jamaica Administrative Athletic Association (JAAA) Dr Warren Blake said that he could not comment on the matter as he had not heard from the sprinter’s camp. Blake was scheduled to run in Budapest on July 10 at the Gyulai Memorial meet as the event website informs. EME NEWS notes that a confirmation from Blake´s agent Cubie Seegobin or from Racers TC should be necessary to have the Jamaican Observer story confirmed.
PUNE (IND): Former middle distance World champion Rashid Ramzi will be returning to the track for the first time in nearly five years next week. Ramzi will be a part of Bahrain’s national team competing at the 20th Asian Athletics Championships, taking place in Pune, India, from July 3 to 7. Apart from Ramzi, the team will have one other former World champion in Youssef Saad Kamel. Kamel will be one of the top runners in the men’s 800m. Meanwhile, Bahrain’s other World champion, Maryam Yusuf Jamal, has decided to withdraw from the Asian championships. It is expected that 580 athletes from 43 nations will compete.
JOHANNESBURG (RSA): South Africa’s university sports body has withdrawn its membership of the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) in order to allow the country’s athletics team to compete at the World Student Games, University Sport SA (USSA) president Tyrone Pretorius confirmed on Sunday. The 27-member track and field and road running contingent had been omitted from the squad named earlier in the week, after Athletics SA (ASA) was suspended by Sascoc.
PUNE (IND): Qatar’s Dahlan Al Hamad has promised a major revamp of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) if he is chosen to replace the disgraced Suresh Kalmadi as President at the elections in Pune on Monday. Kalmadi, 69, is seeking to be elected for a third consecutive term having taken over in 2000, despite currently being on bail having been in prison for ten months for his alleged involvement in a series of corruption scandals linked the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, which he was in charge of. The Indian had been elected unopposed in the two previous elections but faces a stiff challenger in 56-year-old Al Hamad, vice-president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and President of the Qatar Association of Athletics Federation (QAAF). DUBLIN (IRL): The revised winning time in women’s 20 km by Spanish Maria Jose Poves is 1:29:58 at the Dublin race walking competition.
MERSIN (TUR): Women high jump ended in a tie at the Mediterranean Games. Both Turkey’s Burcu Yuksel and Croatia’s Ana Simic cleared all heights up to 192 with their first attempt. They both failed three times at 194 and at all subsequent tie-breaking heights (1.94/x, 1.92/x, 1.90/x), after which they agreed to make no further attempts, so they were both awarded with the first place and the gold medal.
