On the other side of the age scale the 13.92 of Yamila Aldama is Masters World Indoor Record in category 40+. She can improve on that on Sunday´s final.

ALBUQUERQUE (USA, Mar 1): First day of US Indoor Championships saw Sharon Day winning the pentathlon with 4478 points (8.57-182-15.57-582-2:20.86). Gunnar Nixon is leading the heptathlon with excellent 3527 points (6.86-742-14.27-214) ahead of World champ Trey Hardee 3405 (6.77-734-14.77-196).
NEW YORK (USA, Mar 1): Running in a specially arranged race in the Columbia Final Qualifier meet in the Armory in New York City, two-time Olympian Lopez Lomong set a pending USA 5000m indoor record of 13:07.00, just eclipsing Bernard Lagat’s mark of 13:07.15 set on the same track at the Millrose Games in 2012. Lomong’s mark had been reported at 13:06.99, but was later taken up to 13:07.00. The race was arranged by Nike coach Jerry Schumacher with the goal of getting as many of his athletes the IAAF “A” standard of 13:15.00 for the 2013 World Championships. In addition to Lomong, former Stanford star Chris Derrick got the standard with his 13:12.00 clocking in second place, making him the third-fastest American of all time behind Lagat and Galen Rupp (13:11.44). Andrew Bumbalough finished third in 13:23.68. Writes Race Results Weekly. Canadian Brian Gagnon won the 1000 m in 2:18.26 ahead of Mike Rutt 2:18.27.

FAYETTEVILLE (USA, Mar 1): Estonian Marek Niit showed increased shape at the open meet here with 20.76 at the 200 m and 46.36 in the 400 m. But he was not the best as Jamaican Akeem Gauntlett posted 20.73 and 46.14. Fast 800 m for Leoman Momoh (21) a new name in US 800 m with 1:46.07 over Tomas Squella of Chile 1:46.76, national indoor record. Christin Wurth-Thomas did her rare indoor appearance with 2:05.17 in the 800 m.

SHEFFIELD (GBR): Insidethegames informs that Sheffield’s Don Valley Stadium, built for the 1991 Summer Universiade and where Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis started her career and still trains, is to be closed. Sheffield City Council voted to go ahead with the closure of the Stadium as part of a package of cuts. The Council has to save £50 millionin the next financial year. Ennis reacted to news of the closure minutes after it was announced, tweeting: “So sad to lose Don Valley Stadium! Where it all started for me. Great memories.”
